This picture says it all.
The batsman in question, I’m not sure who he is but I heard he scored some runs (bonus info: He's Jacques Kallis from South Africa, one of the greatest modern-day legends of the game).
He was delivered a ball from 22 yards away (bonus info: by India's S.Sreesanth).
He had something in the region of 0.4 seconds to see the ball, understand what it was doing, decide what response to offer, and execute it.
The athleticism alone at the top level is astonishing, forget modern fielding. Look at the the true athleticism in cricket.
This bloke, less than half a second ago, didn’t know if he was driving a ball through the covers or clipping one to fine leg. He ends up successfully evading a ball in a pose many osteopaths would think impossible.
You can play football or rugby, sports I love myself, but test match batting is unique, you can’t fake that.

Unlike today, India was not winning every other match.
We had not witnessed India ending up with scores or chasing 300+ totals. We had been watching a team that would crumble with the smallest pressure, bow down against the mighty Windies, Aussies and the like. We were used to India failing in most things — even beyond Cricket.
I could talk about the might of the West Indian team, the strong leadership of Lloyd, the ferociousness of their pace quartet, the legends named Richards, Greenridge and Haynes. I could talk about the swinging, pace-favouring conditions in England, I could talk about the pressure of defending low totals. But all that is not relevant.
The victory is not merely contained in a match or a tournament, but a wave that changed the image of a nation, the start of a religion, the commencement of hope. It is about showing India can. It was about the confidence that went beyond just Cricket. It was about a nation climbing back to glory.
