‘The Finisher’ Dinesh Karthik played an astonishing knock for the India National Cricket Team in the first T20I match of the five-match T20I series against Nicholas Pooran-led West Indies National Cricket Team at the Brian Lara Stadium, Tarouba, Trinidad on Friday, July 29.
West Indies won the toss and invited India to bat first in the match. Pacer Alzarri Joseph made his T20I debut for West Indies and Shimron Hetmyer made his comeback to the side.
Batting first, India captain Rohit Sharma played brilliantly and he scored 64 runs off 44 balls, including 7 fours and 2 sixes, before being dismissed by Jason Holder. Suryakumar Yadav also made a decent contribution but other batters, including Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant and Hardik Pandya failed to make any major contributions.
Dinesh Karthik came out to bat after the dismissal of skipper Rohit Sharma in the 15th over. He was only able to add 11 runs with Ravindra Jadeja before the all-rounder got dismissed in the 16th over.
After that, veteran wicketkeeper-batsman Dinesh Karthik batted cautiously before going berserk against the West Indies National Cricket Team bowling attack.
The 37-year-old Dinesh Karthik scored just 17 runs in his first 12 deliveries, but then he smashed sensational 24 runs at a strike rate of 342.85 in the last 7 balls of his innings.
Overall he was able to smash 41 runs off 19 balls, including 4 fours and 2 sixes, and he batted with a strike rate of 215.78. He also added 52 runs in just 25 balls with off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin.
Meanwhile, Karthik’s 41 runs cameo knock, which came at a strike rate of 215.78, is the third best knock by an Indian batter in the T20I cricket against West Indies in terms of strike rate.
