3 Simple Steps to Remove Blockage on Words (Stammering & Stuttering Help)
If you often get stuck on certain words — feeling like the word just won't come out no matter how hard you try — here are 3 steps that can genuinely help reduce that blockage.
Step 1: Stop Forcing the Word
The harder you push to say a blocked word, the tighter your vocal cords and airflow get. The moment you feel a block coming, pause instead of forcing it. This one shift alone reduces a lot of struggle.
Step 2: Start with a Gentle, Stretched Sound
Instead of attacking the first letter head-on, ease into it. Stretch the first sound softly (like "Mmmy" instead of "M-m-my") and let the rest of the word flow naturally at normal speed. This is called the Prolongation or Easy Onset technique, and it's one of the most effective ways to move past a block.
Step 3: Keep Your Breath Steady
Most blocks happen because breathing gets shallow or held right before a hard word. Take a small relaxed breath before speaking, and let your breath lead the word out — don't let the word lead your breath.
Practice these 3 steps daily — starting alone, then with people you're comfortable with, then in real conversations. Blockage doesn't disappear overnight, but with consistent practice, it becomes much more manageable.
