Back in January 2022, I was working with a Warranty & Services organization that had just brought in a fresh group of college interns to handle our Digital Marketing campaigns.
These interns were not only smart and ambitious but also had a clear vision of what they wanted from their careers and lives.
One day, I spotted Devarsh (name changed) in the smoking zone outside, hanging out with some leaders and seemingly senior executives. We were operating out of a corporate block, and many corporate employees would gather there for a smoke.
Curious, I called out to Devarsh, knowing he didn’t smoke. “Hey, when did you start smoking?” I asked.
He replied, “No, ma’am, I don’t smoke.”
“So what are you doing here?” I inquired further.
What he said next was a revelation for me. “I am just hanging out with some senior executive folks, getting to know them better, sharing some of my work and designs with them, giving them a glimpse of my artistry. Basically building PR. You never know what comes in handy at what time.”
In that moment, I gained deep respect for Devarsh. Such futuristic and visionary thinking is rare to see in anyone these days. I walked back inside my office, pondering his words.
Six months later, I heard that Devarsh had landed a job as a Digital Marketing Manager in one of those corporate companies he had been networking with.
That day, he opened my eyes to the true power of networking. Building meaningful relationships can open doors to opportunities that traditional job applications might not uncover.
