Isnāt it strange? We are so quick to give our kids antibiotics, yet we hesitate when it comes to giving them essential vitamins. š±
Just the other day, one of my neighbour shared with me that his three-year-old son was frequently falling ill and had very weak immunity. During our conversation, I suggested he start giving his child vitamins and reduce the amount of junk food and chocolate his son was consuming daily.
The moment I mentioned vitamins, he immediately asked, āAre there any side effects? Is it safe for my child?ā This is the same parent who doesnāt think twice about giving his child antibiotics every time he falls sick. Why is it that when it comes to antibiotics, the question of side effects never seems to come up?
Itās important to understand that while antibiotics can be life-saving in certain situations, their overuse can lead to serious side effects. Antibiotics donāt just target harmful bacteria; they also kill the beneficial bacteria in our gut, which play a crucial role in digestion, immunity, and even mood regulation. Over time, this can lead to antibiotic resistance, making it harder to treat infections. In children, frequent antibiotic use can cause digestive issues, weakened immune systems, allergic reactions, and even impact their long-term health.
On the other hand, providing essential vitamins and nutrients offers countless benefits with minimal risks. Vitamins like A, C, D, and E, along with minerals like zinc and iron, are vital for a childās growth and development. They support a strong immune system, promote healthy bone growth, and enhance brain function, all while improving energy levels and mood. Unlike antibiotics, vitamins nourish the body from within, helping to build a natural defence against illnesses rather than just treating symptoms after they occur.
We need to shift our mindset and prioritize giving our children what truly benefits them ā the vitamins and nutrients their bodies need to thrive. š Instead of reaching for antibiotics at the first sign of illness, letās consider how we can strengthen their natural defences by ensuring they receive the right nutrition.
