Jammu and Kashmir Sports Council Established in 1959, the Council works to identify, nurture, and support sporting The constitution of the Council was approved on 27th June 1960.

Jammu & Kashmir Sports Council is a Government organisation dedicated to the promotion, development, and regulation of sports across the Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir. The J&K Sports Society registered under the Societies Registration Act IV of S. 1998 came into existence in 1959 with its Governing body viz. J&K Sports Council constituted vide Govt Order No.: 390 of 1959 dt: 10-08-1959 with a strength of 22 as founder members with a sole aim to promote & propagate sports across J&K. Thereafter the J&K Sports Council was re-constituted from time to time with the Honble Chief Minister as President & Honble Minister for Youth Services & Sports as Vice President. In absence of Political Government Honble Lt. Governor and Honble Advisor, I/C Youth Services & Sports Department are functioning as President and Vice President respectively. Other Members are also nominated by the Govt as per provisions of the constitution. The J&K Sports Council is an autonomous body functioning as per its constitution under the Administrative control of Department of Youth Services & Sports. The strength of Sports Council members was raised from 23 to 25 in September 1992. Consequent upon the revision of the constitution on 23rd April 2001, the number of members was increased from 23 to 29 with a provision of 2 provincial Joint Secretaries. During 2017 the revision of constitution took place on 06.09.2017. Under the revised constitution the strength of members was raised upto 31. The Chief Accounts Officer on deputation from Finance Department shall function as Treasurer in J&K Sports Council. The Chief Accounts Officer (Treasurer) is functioning as Drawing & Disbursing Officer of J&K Sports Council and operating upon the Bank Accounts of the J&K Sports Council with the concurrence of the Secretary, J&K Sports Council. As a measure to streamline the functioning of J&K Sports Council in a transparent & responsive manner, the revision of Constitution again took place on 12.06.2020. As per the revised constitution the strength of members has been reduced to 15 members including President & Vice President. The revised constitution provides posting of Secretary & Joint Secretaries on deputation basis from the Govt. The revised constitution also provides Drawing & Disbursing Powers to Joint Secretaries and Executive Engineers in the Council at Divisional level. The main objectives/functions of the J&K Sports Council are:-
To promote sports activities in the J&K among the student & non-student youth. To provide sports infrastructure in various parts of the J&K. To regulate activities of recognized Sports Associations and to provide financial assistance to them for carrying out sports activities at various levels. To provide specific coaching to promising sportspersons of the J&K. To provide all assistance to sportspersons for excellence in sports at different levels. To advise the Govt in matters relating to promotion of sports & sportspersons of the J&K.

Sporting Spirit Soars in Shopian and Kishtwar as Young Athletes Embrace Competition🏅

Sporting activities continued across J&K, with young athletes competing in Taekwondo and Volleyball as the J&K Sports Council works to provide competitive platforms and promote grassroots sports.

🥋 Shopian:The Shah Payaan UT-Level Taekwondo Championship 2026 continues with 350+ athletes from 17 districts. Organised by the Taekwondo Association of District Shopian and affiliated with the J&K Taekwondo Association, it gives boys and girls a platform to compete, gain exposure and showcase their skills.

🏐 Kishtwar: Under the My Youth My Pride initiative, a special Volleyball competition was held at the Indoor Hall, with 100+ young athletes and 150+ spectators. Players from Kishtwar and surrounding areas competed closer to home, and refreshments were provided.

Through My Youth My Pride and regular district and UT-level competitions, the J&K Sports Council is taking sports opportunities to districts, rural and far-flung areas, and facilitating training, competition and talent identification across disciplines. 💪

Srinagar is hosting the 9th National Deaf Men's T20 Cricket Championship 2026, with athletes from across the country taking part.

📍 Bakshi Stadium and TRC Ground, Srinagar

At the opening ceremony, the Secretary, J&K Sports Council, congratulated the participating athletes and stressed the importance of inclusive sporting opportunities, saying sports belongs to all.

The championship reflects the J&K Sports Council's continued efforts to promote competitive and inclusive sports, support national-level events and use sports infrastructure in Jammu and Kashmir to give athletes quality platforms.

With athletes from across India taking part, it also highlights Srinagar's growing role as a host for national sporting competitions and the power of sports to bring people from different regions together.

🏉 Kupwara: 150+ athletes at the 10th District Rugby 7's Championship, Govt Boys HSS Hirri
🥋 Akhnoor: 465+ students competed at the District Thang-Ta Championship, Indoor Sports Complex
🥊 Pulwama: 250+ young women took part in the Khelo India ASMITA Women's Wushu League, Awantipora

The Jammu & Kashmir Sports Council (JKSC) today held UT-level trials for Sub-Junior Boys (Football) at the TRC Synthetic Football Turf, Srinagar, to finalise the J&K squad for the NFC National Football Championship 2026.

Talented young footballers from across the Union Territory turned up to showcase their skills. An expert selection panel assessed players on technical ability, game awareness, and fitness, with support from the accompanying physiotherapy team.

Secretary, J&K Sports Council, Tazayun Mukhtar Kawos (JKAS), was present during the proceedings.

JKSC reaffirmed its commitment to identifying and nurturing grassroot sporting talent across Jammu and Kashmir, upholding a transparent, merit driven selection process rooted in fair competition.

🏐🏐 “ My Youth My Pride”takes grassroots sports to Batote & Bandipora!

Volleyball competition at GHSS Batote, Ramban saw enthusiastic local participation, while the District Netball Championship at Indoor Sports Hall, Shadipora, Sumbal brought together 160 players, 15 officials and around 50 spectators.

From school grounds to district halls, J&K Sports Council continues taking sports beyond urban centres, giving young athletes in every district a platform to compete, showcase talent and progress toward higher-level sporting opportunities.

🏅 Proud moment for India

Shriya Gupta and Vishal Thapar are off to represent India at the 20th Asian Games, Aichi-Nagoya 2026, the first Sabre fencers from J&K to make it to the Asian Games.

Secretary, J&K Sports Council, Tazayun Mukhtar Kawos, JKAS met the duo to wish them luck ahead of their journey. The entire J&K Sports Council family is cheering them on.

Warm farewell accorded today to Dr. Shahid Iqbal Choudhary, Commissioner/Secretary, Youth Services & Sports, on his transfer to Arunachal Pradesh. The event was attended by senior officers of the Department, including the Secretary, J&K Sports Council.

Officers and officials thanked him for his leadership, guidance and contribution to strengthening the sports ecosystem, including infrastructure development, successful Khelo India implementation and greater sporting opportunities for youth across J&K.

Dr. Choudhary thanked the team for their cooperation and dedication, crediting the Department’s progress to collective effort. He wished continued success in future youth and sports initiatives.
