The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway—often called the Toy Train—is one of India’s most iconic mountain railways. It connects New Jalpaiguri (near Siliguri) to the hill town of Darjeeling, winding through the eastern Himalayas.

* Built: 1879–1881
* Length: ~88 km (55 miles)
* Gauge: Narrow gauge (2 ft / 610 mm)
* UNESCO Status: Declared a World Heritage Site in 1999
* Highest station: Ghum railway station (about 2,258 m)

* Loops & Zigzags: Ingenious engineering helps the train climb steep gradients, especially at the famous Batasia Loop.
* Steam locomotives: Many services still use vintage steam engines, giving a nostalgic feel.
* Street-level tracks: In places like Kurseong, the train runs right along the road!
