Remembering the legendary Dhyan Chand on his birthday.
Dhyan Chand was an integral part of the Indian hockey team that won three consecutive Olympic gold medals in 1928, 1932, and 1936, before Independence. He scored a brace in the 1928 final and a hat-trick in the 1936 final; contemporary records attribute him a tournament-leading 14 goals in 1928 and 11 in 1936. Across 12 Olympic matches, multiple sources list his tally at either 37 or 39 goals; a conservative, widely cited figure is 37, averaging approximately 3.08 goals per match.
Chandโs overall career goal count is often reported in popular accounts as 570 in 185 matches, though such figures stem from historical retellings rather than a single official ledger.
Chandโs birthday, 29 August, is celebrated as National Sports Day in India. The nationโs highest sporting honour is now the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award, renamed in August 2021.
