The Wrong Way to Develop a Child's Hand-Eye Coordination in Table Tennis and the Drill Our Kids Are Doing Instead
The wrong way to improve hand-eye coordination in a junior table tennis player is to stand them at a table, feed balls slowly, and wait while the child thinks about each one before responding.
It teaches caution. It does not build the fast, instinctive connection between what the eye sees and what the hand does that table tennis actually demands.
The right way is to structure practice so that the repetitions are fast, the child is moving through each one before they have time to overthink it, and the format itself makes the whole thing feel like a game rather than a drill.
In this reel, our junior players at Metrocity Sports Club, Ideal Colony are doing exactly that.
They rotate in a circle, stepping up one at a time to hit a forehand counter off the coach's fast feed, then moving aside while the next player comes in.
Two balls each. Three balls each. High repetitions in a short time. Hand-eye coordination building with every turn.
And they are visibly loving every second of it.
When training feels like this, children do not need to be pushed to come back tomorrow.
They ask when the next session is.
This is what table tennis for kids in Kothrud at our Ideal Colony facility looks like every day.
