Road Conditions - Road conditions are good must of the way. South of Goa, there are some stretches where roads are under construction and that is the section which has a local traffic. After we leave Mangalore the road is fabulous and one section may actually be a bit lonely! Going thru Belgaum will have traffic and depending on when you enter Goa there may be some traffic. The 1200 km is combined with a 200 km brevet which is an out and back, starting with the 1200 Km on the Coast highway, and returning to Bogmalo by the same route. The fourth and last day started at Dharwad after a very long night on the road. Rolling climbing terrain till Belgaum where the route leaves NH4 to head towards Goa via Chorla Ghat, is followed by more rolling terrain with a headwind. Untill finally the route goes thru dense forest sections before descending to the Konkan coast. The worst challenge of the day however was the navigation!
Jins and Mohan, arrived at Bogmalo beach to be greeted by fellow participants Vamsee and Rajeev who had quit the ride earlier but waited to receive the finishers. Sanjay, a fellow participant who had also quit the ride, was actually officiating. After a lot of stress about whether or not Amey and Hemanth would finish on time we all breathed a sigh of relief when they arrived at finish point with just a couple of minutes to spare!
All the finishers spent some time on the Sand after 4 days of Sun and Sweat!

Though the terrain was more forgiving for the stretch from Tumkur 656km to Dharwad at 1017km.... The same could not be said about the sun.... which beat down relentlessly on the riders with absolutely no shade for the entire stretch. Mercifully there was no head wind on a road where sometimes the headwind can blow you right away!

Day 2 was by far the hardest.... The heat remained unrelenting even climbing away from the coast and into the forest covered slopes of the climb up to Sakleshpur.
For JIns... the day included a battle for turf with a GOAT.... that showed an unseemly interest in his bike! :-D

The first edition of the Sun, Sand and Sweat 1200km brevet included a 200 BRM. Randonneurs from many different clubs came for the 2 brevets including the organisers of the London Edinburgh London 1400km Brevet. The evening before the brevet we met up at Bogmalo beach for an informal chat and briefing. Always lovely to interact with Randonneurs!
The 200 was attempted by 14 and finished by 9! The 1200 saw 7 start and before the end of day 1... 3 had quit.
The heat was unseasonbly HOT and that certainly took its toll on the riders!

The 1200 has taken its toll... The unseasonable extreme heat carries on on day two, scorching on the gruelling climb after Mangalore! Out of seven only four, Amey, Hemath, Jins and Mohan are still on course!

Some pix from the morning. It's very hot now at 3 in the afternoon!
