Former sports venue looks like a war zone
I ATTENDED a bowls match recently at Belvedere and was appalled by what I saw. The site resembled a war zone, such as we see nightly on television in Afghanistan and Iraq. The site is enclosed by ametal fence that would do justice to Guantanamo Bay and the only amenity the bowlers are left with, apart from the greens, is water. There’s no electricity, so
no lights or means of using electrical equipment or even making a drink. It’s disgraceful that things have been allowed to be left in this state and I commend the bowlers for carrying on and completing their league fixtures under such horrendous conditions. Whoever is responsible for this awful state of affairs—ruining what used to be the premier sporting venue in Burton— should be thoroughly ashamed of themselves and should pull out all the stops to decide the future of this site now.
