The birth of this tournament lies on the foundation of the sad and tragic death of Master Kalpesh who died on 12th April 1989 at a premature age of 15 years. Kalpesh had mastered leg spin bowling at an early age and was selected by M.C.A selectors for Gundappa Vishwanath Cricket Tournament conducted by “ Shatkar Trophy”. Shri Nagesh Thakur, the then Secretary of New Hind Sporting Club, who was a
lso senior coach for Mumbai Summer Vacation Cricket Camps conducted by Mumbai Cricket Association was planning/ dreamt of cricket tournament for these coaching camps. As these camps had no base, the boys used to play friendly matches amongst the camps teams. They would skip training on the day of the match. Thus there was disorganize, indiscipline moment of the great idea of Summer Vacation Cricket Camps. The sudden death of Master Kalpesh gave birth to the very idea of the tournament in the mind of Nagesh Thakur. He produced the plan to Govind, Gopal and Chadrakant Koli father and uncle of Master Kalpesh. Then the master plan was discussed in New Hind Sporting Club Managing Committee Meeting and produced to Mumbai Cricket Association for Sanction. The idea behind this tournament was to bring all the camps, boys together at the end of the camp season. The M.C.A. selectors will get an opportunity to see these boys who were being trained by the coaches for 5 weeks and in last week these boys would fight for the Master Kalpesh Govind Koli Trophy. The idea of such a tournament was then supported by the M.C.A tournament Secretary Shri. Pravin Barve but Prof. Ratnakar Shetty became Tournament Secretary, who gave the much needed green signal to New Hind Sporting Club by getting sanction in the Managing Committee of M.C.A. in the year 1991. It was decided that the tournament expenses will be born by New Hind Sporting Club. There will be prizes to man of the matches, best batsman, best bowler, best wicket keeper, the best coach and best umpire of the tournament.
