Why is chest-opening preparation essential for backbends?
A strong backbend isn’t created by simply bending the spine—it begins with opening the front of the body.
Chest-opening preparatory practices improve mobility in the shoulders and thoracic spine, release tightness in the pectoral muscles, and strengthen the upper back. This allows the heart space to lift, distributes the curve evenly through the spine, and reduces unnecessary compression in the lower back.
When the chest opens, the arms can press more effectively into the floor, making it easier to straighten the elbows and lift into a stable, effortless Chakrasana.
Prepare first. Backbend later. The body always rewards intelligent practice over force.
