Working on Drops of Jupiter in a one-on-one session.

One of the challenges in this song is maintaining coordination as the voice moves between registers while keeping the sound connected and expressive.

We worked on developing a more balanced transition and strengthening the mixed voice so the performance feels less effortful and more consistent.

One of the things my students mention most often is feeling understood.
Not because I have all the answers.
But because every voice deserves to be approached as an individual.
That's where meaningful progress begins.

One of the biggest shifts a singer can make is moving from comparison to understanding.

Your voice was never meant to sound like someone else's. The work is learning how to bring out its best qualities.

After years of teaching, I've noticed something interesting.
Students rarely talk about exercises when they reflect on their growth.
They talk about understanding.
Understanding why something wasn't working.
Understanding their strengths.
Understanding their limitations.
Understanding what their voice needs.
Because confidence doesn't come from guessing.
It comes from understanding.

One of the most meaningful parts of teaching is hearing how singers experience the journey in their own words.

This is an unedited reflection from one of my students after working together.

Every singer's path is different, and while technique, range, and vocal development are important, what matters most to me is helping each student understand their voice, grow in confidence, and develop as an artist.

Grateful to be a small part of that journey.

Many singers panic after a difficult session and assume they’ve “lost” something.

But the voice changes daily depending on fatigue, tension, sleep, stress, coordination, and vocal load.

Learning to recognise why the voice feels different is part of serious training.

Have you ever mistaken fatigue for lack of progress?

Not every singer may feel fully prepared for a structured approach to their work. Readiness is often reflected in consistency rather than just a strong desire to perform.

There’s a difference between spending time with the voice and actually training it.

Many singers assume that more practice will solve inconsistency.

But practice doesn’t correct what isn’t understood yet.

If breath, register transitions, and tone are not coordinating efficiently, repetition tends to reinforce the same patterns — pushing, instability, or fatigue.

That’s why progress can feel slow, even with effort.

The shift happens when the voice is organised, not just exercised.

A reflection from a student after working consistently on coordination and structure:

“Honestly, the exercises made the difference. I’ve realised that singing is like any other form of training — the more you work with it correctly, the stronger and more reliable it becomes.
I feel more confident in my voice now. It sounds more natural, and no longer feels forced.”

When the work is structured well, the voice begins to respond with far less effort.
