BEYOND THE POSE 006 The Five Vayus β Five Movements of Prana
In yoga, prana is described as moving through the body in five primary directions. Each Vayu describes a different function of this movement:
β’ Prana Vayu β Governs inward movement β breath, intake and receiving.
β’ Apana Vayu β Governs downward movement β elimination, grounding and release.
β’ Samana Vayu β Governs movement toward the centre β digestion and assimilation.
β’ Udana Vayu β Governs upward movement β expression, speech and growth.
β’ Vyana Vayu β Governs movement throughout β circulation, coordination and connection.
The practice is not only about how we move the body, but about becoming aware of how energy moves through us.
