Cyclists of Manipal:
11. Animish Phatak
It was 5 in the morning when a group of guys and I were heading from MIT to a petrol pump in Udupi. If there is a day I have to pick when I get into endurance cycling, this would be it. The task ahead was a 200Km ride through forests, highways and rolling hills β my first Brevet. The farthest I had cycled before this was from MIT to Delta Beach- a grand total of 40km. I was definitely punching above my weight. The first 50 Km after the flag-off were pleasant β straight highways, cool air and good company. As the sun rose higher in the sky, the wheat started separating from the chaff (I was the chaff). While seemingly 50-year-old uncles zoomed past me, I was now riding all alone to the halfway mark of the scenic Mookambika temple. Huffing and puffing, I reached the 100Km mark to witness the uncles start their journey back, having already finished a hearty lunch and also fit in some sightseeing. I stuffed some bananas and started back asap β there was a time limit after all. Too late, and I will be disqualified. If the first half was difficult, the second was hell. My busted legs and sore bum somehow peddled through the twilight to reach just in time to Udupi. The feeling of accomplishment (and relief) is better experienced than put in words.
As dramatic my first experience in the long-distance ride was, it built in me the confidence and perseverance to do the next 200Km, 300Km and eventually take part in a 2000Km long journey from Manipal to Jaipur. Sometimes all you need to do is to punch beyond your weight.
