Swami Vivekananda's words, “You will be nearer to heaven through football than through the study of the Gita,” are drawn from his seminal work Lectures from Colombo to Almora, specifically from the chapter The Work Before Us. Delivered during his return to India from the West in 1897, this series of lectures encapsulates his vision for a strong, self-reliant nation. The book, first published by Vyjayanti Press, Madras, in 1897, reflects his profound understanding of the balance between physical vitality and spiritual wisdom.
As we celebrate Swami Ji’s 162nd birth anniversary on January 12, 2025, we are reminded of the timeless relevance of his teachings. Even after over a century, his philosophy holds true, serving as a guide for holistic development. Swami Ji did not devalue the Bhagavad Gita’s teachings; instead, he emphasized the need for strength, action, and discipline to fully grasp and live its spiritual principles. For him, physical activities like football symbolized the resilience, focus, and teamwork required for personal and collective growth.
At Mrida, this philosophy resonates deeply. Football, for us, is not merely a game; it is a medium of transformation.
It instills discipline, confidence, and perseverance in young minds, equipping them to face life’s challenges.
Swami Ji’s teachings inspire us to nurture a generation that is strong in both body and spirit.
As we honor his legacy, we will always try our best to empower youth to achieve holistic excellence—on and off the field.
