π§ WHEN ICE BATHS ACTUALLY WORK
* After very hard endurance sessions β can help reduce soreness and perceived fatigue.
* During tournaments / multiple sessions in a day β useful when you need to recover quickly for the next performance.
* After intense heat exposure β can help with cooling the body.
* When soreness is affecting your next workout β may make you feel better and move more comfortably.
* During high-volume training blocks β useful as a recovery tool when the priority is being ready again quickly.
* For short-term recovery β great for how you feel; not necessarily for maximizing long-term adaptation.
β οΈ The catch
If your main goal is muscle growth, donβt make an ice bath your immediate post-lifting ritual. Cold-water immersion can blunt some of the signaling/adaptation associated with resistance training.
Simple rule:
ποΈ Hypertrophy β prioritize recovery, food & sleep; use ice strategically.
π Performance/recovery β ice can be useful when you need to bounce back quickly.
