You didn't start your business to become its employee.

But somewhere along the way, that's exactly what happens to many MSME owners.

You started because you knew how to do something well.

You could sell.

You could manufacture.

You could design.

You could serve customers better than others.

So naturally, you became the person everyone depended on.

And slowly...

The business started depending on you for everything.

One powerful idea from The E-Myth Revisited by Michael E. Ge**er is this:

There is a difference between working in your business and building your business.

Being excellent at the work doesn't mean you've built a business that can operate without you.

A restaurant owner who cooks every dish may be an excellent chef.

But if the restaurant cannot function without that chef, the owner hasn't really built a scalable business.

The same applies to an MSME.

Your expertise is valuable.

But your business becomes more valuable when that expertise gets converted into:

Process → Training → System → Consistent ex*****on

So here's your Saturday exercise:

Pick one task that only you currently know how to do.

Write down the exact steps.

Then teach someone else to do it.

That's not just delegation.

That's the beginning of building a business.

Did your staff miss an important follow-up because nobody reminded them?

A customer enquiry.

A quotation that needed to be sent.

A payment that was due.

An old customer who needed a call.

A supplier who needed confirmation.

You ask your team:

“Why didn't this get done?”

And the answer comes:

“Sir, yaad nahi raha.”

We've all seen this.

But here's the important question:

Is it really a staff problem?

Or have we built a process that depends on someone remembering everything?

Because people forget.

They get busy.

Other priorities come up.

Customers call.

Problems happen.

That's normal.

A good business process should not depend on perfect memory.

For example:

Customer enquiry received
↓
Follow-up task automatically created
↓
Reminder sent to salesperson
↓
No action? Escalation to manager

Now the system remembers.

Your team focuses on doing.

That's what automation should actually mean for an MSME.

Not expensive software.

Not complicated technology.

Simply making sure important things don't fall through the cracks.

Try this this week:

Ask your team:

“What is one important task that gets forgotten regularly?”

Don't immediately blame the person.

Ask:

“Can we build a system so this doesn't depend on memory?”

You can work 12 hours a day and still not be building your business.

This is one of the biggest traps I see with MSME owners.

The day starts with:

“Customer ka issue hai.”

“Staff ko samjhana hai.”

“Supplier ko call karna hai.”

“Payment check karna hai.”

“Sales team ka follow-up dekhna hai.”

By evening, you've solved 20 problems.

You feel productive.

But ask yourself:

How much of your day was spent building something that makes tomorrow easier?

That's the difference between:

Working IN the business
→ Solving today's problems.

Working ON the business
→ Building systems so the same problems don't keep coming back.

If your salesperson forgets follow-ups every week, don't keep reminding them.

Build a follow-up process.

If every customer complaint comes to you, don't become the permanent complaint department.

Train the team. Create a process.

If you're checking every small decision yourself, define what your team can decide without you.

Try this today:

Look at the last 7 days of your calendar.

Divide your activities into:

I — Working IN

O — Working ON

Then calculate the ratio.

If 80–90% of your time is going into IN, don't blame the business for not growing.

You're simply not giving yourself enough time to build it.

The goal isn't to work less.

The goal is to make your work create more leverage.

..and underestimate what they can achieve in one year.

Think about it.

Calling one old customer every day.

Reviewing yesterday's cash flow every evening.

Training one team member for 15 minutes daily.

None of these will transform your business overnight.

But do them consistently for a year, and you'll wonder how your business ever functioned without them.

Many MSMEs chase big breakthroughs—a new product, a big client, a marketing campaign.

Those matter.

But sustainable growth is usually built on small habits repeated without fail.

Here's a challenge for the next 30 days:

Choose **ONE** habit that will improve your business.

Don't choose five.

Don't wait for Monday.

Start today.

Because businesses don't change through occasional brilliance.

They grow through consistent discipline.

Every unpaid invoice costs you twice.

First, it hurts your cash flow.

Then, it steals your time.

Most MSME owners don't realize how many hours disappear every week chasing payments:

• Calling customers
• Sending follow-up WhatsApp messages
• Checking who has paid
• Reminding the same people again

The problem isn't that customers always forget to pay.

The problem is that your reminder process depends on **you remembering** to remind them.

That's not a payment process.

That's a memory test.

A simple automated WhatsApp or SMS reminder can follow up consistently—without anyone having to remember.

It works while you're busy running your business.

One small action this week:

Choose one billing system or CRM you already use and set up an automatic reminder for invoices that remain unpaid after 7 days.

Small automation.

Better cash flow.

Less stress.

Every issue lands on your desk.

Every leave feels impossible.

The result?

Your business grows only as fast as your personal capacity.

The businesses that scale aren't built around extraordinary owners.

They're built on ordinary people following extraordinary systems.

Take one task you perform repeatedly—billing, order processing, customer follow-up, inventory checks—and write down every single step.

One SOP won't transform your business overnight.
