In the end, Jurgen Klopp seems unlikely to get the send off that he deserves. It must be so painful to see his side implode in this manner that all he could do was to grin when Everton scored the second goal last night and seal their first Merseyside derby win since CoVID. It was a must win game for Liverpool, but they failed to turn up for the contest.

Much of their woes stem from the inability of the forwards to find the target. Mo Salah has been absolutely off his game since his return from injury and opportunities that he used to bury into the back of the net are going everywhere but into the net. Nunez is equally lackluster, poor decision making in the final third. He and Nicholas Jackson are currently the worst at shooting straight, even when the goal is there for the taking. Diaz does a lot of running but it's no good if the net result is zero. Unfortunately for Klopp, even the midfield looks flat with MacAllister looking jaded and Endo losing his touch.

Credit to Everton though for putting the debacle at Stamford Bridge behind them and playing with desire last night. All bets are off and reputations mean nothing in derbies and they showed that last night. The three way race is effectively down to two unless City slip up tonight at Brighton.

El Clasico!

You cannot be a serious follower of football if you do not wait for El Clasico with bated breath. To the uninitiated, it is the contest between the two legendary sides, Real Madrid and Barcelona. Past clashes have been immortalized by legends like Messi, Benzema, Christiano Ronaldo and many more. While Real Madrid is still one of the greatest sides in the world, Barcelona are currently struggling. In addition to a number of seasoned players moving on, the coach and former Barcelona faithful Xavi Hernandez was also slated to leave at the end of the season, a decision which he is now reconsidering. Still, the prospect of closing the 8 point gap in the LaLiga league table with old foes Real must was incentive enough for Barcelona to go all out in last night's Clasico. And they did just that, only to fall short by a goal at the end of a contest which was exciting at times, but often fell short of the tempo fans expect from such a storied encounter.

It all seemed to follow a familiar script as Vini Jnr equalized for Real through a penalty, squaring off Barcelona's lead which came thanks to a fine header by Christensen in the 6th minute. Nothing short of a win was the ask for Barca but the urgency was lacking, perhaps the heartbreaking Champions League defeat at home to PSG last week had drained them mentally and physically. Lamine Yamal was fantastic last night and his team was in with a chance whenever the teenaged winger found his way into the Real penalty box, only to be thwarted by Lewandowski, rendered toothless by Rudiger and Tchouameni. The Catalans almost went ahead again in the 30th minute, when a sublime Yamal flick seemed to have crossed the goal line, only to be disallowed by the referee as La Liga does not have goal line technology! Lunin caught the ball behind the line, it was obvious but there was no conclusive camera angle to prove it. It was really unfortunate for the brilliant winger to be denied for lack of such a basic feature in what is perhaps the most watched football league in the world.

Barcelona swapped out both Lewandowski and Rapinha to boost the forward line, and it paid off as Lopez caught a save parried away by Lunin and slotted it home to regain the lead. Another piece of outstanding play from the outfield by Yamal, who took the initial shot at goal. Real, in response, swapped out Kroos for Brahim Diaz for extra oomph up the line. The Barcelona defence came under some real heat with Cancelo rendered useless by Bellingham and co and the equalizer followed shortly. The hallmark for any great side are players who are versatile enough to play in any position as the situation demands. Lucas Vasquez, the 32 year old Real veteran who has exclusively plied his trade with the Bernabeu based side is one such example. Fielded as a right back in this tie, instead of running in the wings which he usually does, the wily Spaniard ran into the Barcelona 16 yard box, unmarked, to receive a Valvarde cross and drove it into the back of the net for the equalizer. Stung by the goal, Barcelona were left with 20 minutes to force the issue and come away with 3 points, but it was not to be as Vasquez found Bellingham inside the penalty box in injury time for the talismanic English midfielder to score the winner for Real.

To be honest, Real were the fancied team in last night's Clasico and were overall the better side, but not by much. Barcelona, especially the young Yamal showed a lot of grit after the UCL loss to come back and take the fight to their arch rivals in their own den. It wasn't enough in the end.

In the end, Coventry City fans would have been left with a million different things to chew over. It could so easily have gone their way, the way their side dominated the 2nd half of extra time. The brilliant runs that Wright made, which could have ended up in their 4th goal. Ellis Simms' blistering shot hitting the cross bar and the offside. Oh my god, I jumped out of my sofa when Victor Torp tapped in what seemed like a fairy tale ending for Coventry. The reality of life is harsh however and very few possibilities escape that to become the stuff of dreams. Such was the case on this occasion, when Torp's goal was ruled out by VAR by an insignificant margin. Coventry players are not used to such huge occasions, the penalty kicks at Wembley in front of 80,000 fans for example and that told on some of them as United went onto seal the tie.

The FA Cup semi final tie seemed done when Manchester United had scored their third goal. But there was always room for thrilling fightbacks with the way Ten Haag's men have been playing these days. A lack of concentration at the back meant Simms was unmarked to score the first of Coventry's three goals. That was followed by just the lucky break a team trailing needs as a piledriver off Aaron Wan Bissaka ballooned over a flailing Onana to find the back of the net. A late penalty and Wright scoring rounded off the incredible comeback by this 8th placed Championship team which nearly knocked one of the world's leading clubs out of the competition.

United fans are perhaps done wondering about what it takes to fix their side's style of play. Blowing a 3 - 0 lead against a team from a lower division is not going to please many. They may have still made the finals but the prospect of facing their cross town rivals will not be inviting with all their woes. It is difficult to see Eric Ten Haag again next season at the helm of United.

By the time the game ended, it was 3:30 AM in India, way past the time I hit the sack. But today, it took another hour after that for my mind to calm down, before I collapsed into a deep slumber. Who cares though? What a contest it was; a shame that penalties were needed to break the deadlock. Manchester City had 33 attempts compared to Real's 8. Even those who watched the game would believe that Guardiola's side had the better of exchanges. While City may have been at Real's neck for much of the 2nd half, and lackluster finishing did let them down, it would be unfair to believe that Ancelotti and Real just about got away with the away tie at the Etihad. What they demonstrated was a masterclass in football defending; such was their discipline and grit, that even the class of KDB, Foden, Haaland and Silva combined rarely got a decent crack at goal up front. Some were complaining about Courtois missing for Real at goal, but Lunin did not blink during those 120 minutes, not even once. And when the Real forwards cut loose, which was rare, they made it count, like the Rodrygo goal assisted by Bellingham and Vini. As the commentator said, Carlo Ancelotti came to Manchester to get his ring kissed by Pep Guardiola.

The first leg last week at Madrid was a rip roaring contest and it was unfair to expect a carbon copy last night. City were expected to dominate at home, with Walker fit and KDB starting. Real knew that the task was cut out for them; they had to be mentally tough and disciplined for the unrelenting attacks that were inevitable. They had just the men for those fast counter attacks however, in Vini and Rodrygo and the latter showed why he is rated so highly and the absence of a proper No 9 makes no difference to Real. Bellingham beautifully controlled a high ball before passing it onto Vini, who found Rodry in the right spot for the first goal. Just after, it was as if someone had flipped the switch for the game to go on overdrive. Grealish was on turbo mode, looking threatening every time he had the ball on the left flank. As expected, Rudiger and Carvajal stuck to Haaland like shadows and while the Norwegian did get a couple of opportunities, it now feels like he doesn't make it count in these big contests. Pep gave the much needed adrenalin shot when he introduced Doku in the second half. The Belgian, like a slippery eel, breached the Real penalty box time and again, only to be let down by poor finishing. KDB should have scored a second from where he missed and Foden just could not get out of his right corner. Kyle Walker proved why he is indispensable for the City back line, one particular piece of defending stands out in my mind where he tracked back and held Vini at bay inside the City PB. No drama, no needless fouls, just pure, old school defending.

No word of praise is high enough for how Real defended, especially Dani Carvajal. Who would believe the Spanish centre back is now 32, the way he kept up with men more than a decade younger! Rudiger was his usual solid self and lets not forget how Kroos and Camavinga dropped deep to keep the defense impregnable. Valverde was everywhere, tracking back to defend if not helping build an attack. It is surprising how underrated some of these players in the European leagues are, compared to some who are hyped up by the 'pundits' . Yes, I am looking at you EPL! For Lucas Vasquez, who came in late, his penalty kick was a revelation; ice cold. Bernardo Silva on the other hand, would want to forget his in a hurry.

A tactical masterclass by Carlo Ancelotti and a lesson in old school Italian style defending. With Arsenal also knocked out last night at Munich, the English challenge in this year's UCL is over. But the tournament is just getting started with PSG, Bayern and Real in the fray for the semis. And I am getting ready for more sleepless nights.

Another roller coaster day in the UEFA Champions League with Paris St Germain coming from behind to pip Barcelona. The Catalan side was all set to go through, but a moment of madness inside the penalty box and they were reduced to ten men. Despite being ahead thanks to a Rapinha strike, they let PSG pump in 4 goals to win 6-4 in aggregate.

Elsewhere, Borussia Dortmund also made a stellar comeback at home to win 4-2 (5-4 on aggregate) thanks to some spectacular goals. Action moves on tonight to Etihad and Munich as Manchester City take on Real Madrid while Bayern face Arsenal.

Antonio Lopez Habas is a man with a stern face and of few words. He is also pragmatic; 'whether it's a 1-0 or a 6-0 win, you still get three points!' is what he believes. Brought back after Mohun Bagan's disastrous show under Juan Ferrando, Habas had to make some tough choices to turn the team around. Tactics were a mess at the grand old club with Anirudh Thapa bogged down, being forced to play as a defensive midfielder. Hugo Boumos' inability to drop deep into defense was proving to be a liability too. Habas had tough calls to make and started by shunting Boumos out and getting Johnny Kauko back. The Finn's ability to play the holding midfielder role made a huge difference to the side's fortunes as was evident with the smooth attacking transitions that MB made repeatedly. Thapa got a new lease of life as Habas used him as a substitute, coming on late in games as a creative midfielder to keep the supply line going for the forward line. The 3-2-4-1 formation took shape under Habas' hawk eyes, which not only yielded a record breaking 48 points, but also a staggering 47 goals this season.

The biggest difference however was what Habas did with Liston Colaco. Having lost his way under Ferrando, Habas gave the Goan winger the liberty to express himself. This added a new dimension to Colaco's game as he not only created chances for Sadiku and Cummings, but also scored in crucial matches, as he did last evening against Mumbai. Loping into the 16 yard box after a gut busting run, Colaco did an exquisite body feint to send a defender the wrong way, before unleashing an explosive shot, burying the ball deep into the Mumbai net. The goal, coming just before the first drinks break, provided the belief to the Bagan players that tonight was to be their night, to come back from behind and sn**ch the title from under their opposition's nose.

And what to say about Dimi Petratos. It was not just his 16 goals + assists, but also his leadership and aggression that helped MB impose themselves in the opposition half. The way Habas used the Australian international Jason Cummings was also a revelation; bringing him on deep in the 2nd half with the defenders tiring, provided just the setting for the explosive forward to strike terror into the heart of the opposition. But it was not just his sharp footballing mind, the mere presence of the veteran Spanish coach made a huge difference to how the players reacted. After floundering against Chennai when Habas was away, his return was just what the players needed as Bagan destroyed Bangalore to set up last night's mouthwatering finale at the Salt Lake stadium.

The ISL shield has just whetted the appetite of the fans, now it's the ISL Cup, where Bagan has already claimed its place in the semis. We want a league double and with Habas around, nothing seems impossible.

Deadly is no more

The curtain comes down on one of the towering legends of the game. A practitioner of the black art of spin bowling plying his trade for a quarter of a century, during which, he picked up over two thousand wickets including 297 in tests. A genial and unassuming gentleman who liked plugging away for countless hours, a professional to the core. Derek Underwood was part of a dying breed, a left arm spin bowler who hated being taken for runs and fully believed in his ability to run through any side like a pace bowler would.

Turning out for Kent throughout his career starting in 1963, the lanky left armer bowled at almost medium pace, despite being an off spinner, relying on unerring accuracy and a hawk's eye for exploiting a hint of help and any sign of weakness. Such was his prolific wicket taking ability that he scalped more than 100 wickets in a season a staggering 10 times, the first of which came in his debut season at the tender age of 17. But what was remarkable was his stamina, allowing him to bowl one over after another for hours at a time, breaking the batsman down in an attritional war of wits. He would have been a worthy adversary today, in an age when most batsmen have neither the technique nor the fortitude to bat for long hours.

But it was on uncovered pitches, which was the norm during his era, that Underwood was at his lethal best. With the ball stopping and bouncing unpredictably on a surface rendered sticky by wet weather, he ran through test sides on numerous occasions, including the fifth Ashes test at the Oval in 1968, when he ran through the Australians to secure a win with minutes to spare. But to say that he required the rain gods to conjure magical spells would be to do disservice to a great exponent of spin bowling; his 54 test wickets in India is a testament to his versatility and remained the highest tally by any visiting bowler, before being overtaken recently by Nathan Lyon. He would have added more to his list of victims but for the ban that he served as punishment for touring apartheid South Africa.

The world of cricket will be poorer without Derek Underwood in it. Rest in Peace.

All of us had a dream club growing up. This was the club which got us hooked to cricket, or football through its memorable exploits. We wept with joy when the cup came home, and cried our guts out at each defeat. Being a part of the eleven was a dream which most of us grew out of, but would you have taken it if you were told that one day, you would not only take the pitch against them, but also score the goal that delivers a blow to their hopes? Ollie Watkins did just that last evening, doubling Aston Villa's lead against his childhood favorite Arsenal, casting doubts on the club's title hopes as the league race enter's its home stretch. Receiving a great ball in the Villa half from Tielemans, the talented striker made a breathtaking run with Arsenal's Smith-Rowe hot on his heels, dinking the ball over Raya at the Arsenal goal to seal a memorable away win for his club.

With Liverpool again falling to "Crystanbul" earlier in the day, the decks were cleared for Mikel Arteta's side to take the three points at home and finish yet another weekend at the top of the table. But as Unai Emery remarked at the post match interview, his side had taken lessons from their 4-1 rout at the Etihad last weekend and came with a gameplan. They were resolute in defense, playing with a 4-4-1-1 formation, leaving little room between the lines for the Arsenal attack to exploit. I am not sure if Martinelli wasn't fully fit, but he would have been a better choice partnering Trossard from the start instead of Jesus. Much like the Anfield game earlier in the day, the ball just refused to go in for either side with three attempts coming off the woodwork and another, a simple tap in for Trossard, coming off Martinez at the Villa goal.

Credit where it is due however for Aston Villa and like Watkins said later, that they had strict instructions from Emery to play to plan and not take recourse to long balls into the opposition half. That would have allowed Arsenal to dominate the midfield and put pressure on the Villa final third. Odegaard was again brilliant for the Gunners, creating chances for the forwards with balls bisecting the opposition defense, only to see them wasted. I thought Arsenal were just that tad hesitant in throwing everything at Villa in the 1st half, perhaps afraid that they would get stung on the counterattack. Maybe Arteta would have been better off playing Rice in his usual position and having Jorginho in deep. Their finishing needed to be better and when the goals didn't come in the first half, Villa grew in confidence and made the home side pay.

Meanwhile, Ollie Watkins did not look too repentant at having sent the home fans into despair. "There is no soft corner anymore, I play for Villa and this is my club" There is no room for emotions at this level. Neither is there any time for them, as Arsenal faces a stern midweek test away at Munich in the Champions League.

Neverkusen no more!

Forever the bridesmaid and the also rans, the fans of Bayer Leverkusen rushed down to the edge of the pitch and chanted "you will never be champions!", an ironical taunt at their detractors as their club was dismantling Werder 5-0 and, in the process, edging towards their first Bundesliga title. A team which was nearly relegated two seasons back, turned itself around in a fairytale season under Xabi Alonso, pipping giants Bayern Munich who had won eleven consecutive titles before this year.

Based in a small town built around a giant aspirin factory, Bayer Leverkusen has usually been the target of unkind jibes, thanks to their checkered past. Even their most devoted fans would have given up after they kept tripping at the final hurdle, year after year. But not Alonso, who saw potential in a side which counted players like Victor Boniface and Jonas Hofmann up front, the latter valued at a paltry 10 million when the club signed him. And what to say about the left back Alejandro Grimaldo, who came as a free transfer! Last but not the least, the former Arsenal skipper Granit Xhaka, whose career trajectory was marred by his temperament, something that Alonso was able to manage at Leverkusen to get the best out of him.

Leverkusen did not have the billions or history behind them, but had the belief of their devoted fans and a visionary manager. That proved to be enough in the end.

It's a club which stands apart from every other top flight football club. A club which signs only those with ties to it's home base. It is a side with rich history and heritage and has just won it's first major trophy in 40 years.

The club in question is Athletic Club Bilbao, which just won the Spanish Copa Del Ray, much to the delight of the Basque autonomous region in Spain where it is based. A million supporters thronged the streets of Bilbao to celebrate the hard fought win over Mallorca. The celebratory barge "La Gabarra" was brought out to cruise the Nervion river and display the prize, ending their long trophy drought, much to the delirium of the fans.

Athletic Club is truly unique for signing only those who were either born in Basque or learnt their football there. There is no bar for Basque born footballers who may have grown up elsewhere, to play for the club. In a sea of sides where loyalty to the club is tenuous and often only as good as your performance in the last game, the Ernesto Valverde coached side reinforces the faith of it's fans that they support a club which truly belongs to them

Heidenheim FC, the side that has been making waves in this season's Bundesliga was up against Bochum in an away game. The team which had come back from behind to beat Bayern, started on the backfoot as Bochum mounted pressure. For a side which has thrived on an attacking brand of football, I thought they did well to soak up all the pressure the home side threw at them.

Beste, the left winger made some good runs down the flank and there was a particularly good link up play with Fohrenbach, the full back. It was easy to see why this team has the most productive numbers off corners this season as they use their physicality to good effect. They are quite versatile too as in one instance, Kevin Sessa, the centre forward, dropped deep to scuttle an attack.

The visitors held on well throughout the first half and the second half saw a barrage of Bochum attacks, which the well drilled Heidenheim defense handled with aplomb. They were finally rewarded with a lucky goal which bounced badly for a Bochum defender and went in for an own goal. Schlotterbeck, the villain, was however able to make amends as he equalized for the home side not very long before the final whistle.

A contest which went from watchful to a delightful open one, Heidenheim come away with yet another point in their inspiring first season at the Bundesliga.

Many Liverpool fans may believe that the club belongs to the Champions League and not Europa. Well they got a reality check last night when Atalanta came calling. If the reds thought they would just roll over their visitors from Bergamo, they were in for a rude shock. Klopp fielded a side sans the big guns and it all started with Tsimikas looking shaky on the left. After he gave away a couple of balls, Atalanta got a brilliant opportunity but for Kelleher, who took the brunt of a stinging shot flat in the face. But they finally got the goal they deserved when they went up in the 38th minute. There were moments when it looked like Liverpool would equalize and the comeback would begin, but that was just not to be.

Even Endo and Macallister looked out of sorts and Curtis Jones was just terrible, so much so that Klopp swapped him and Harvey Elliot out at the beginning of the second half. Gakpo worked hard last night, dropping deep to retrieve balls and initiate attacks, but Liverpool's attacking woes just refuse to go away. Not Nunes, not Salah, neither showed up last night. Nunes makes these breathless runs, but ends up making terrible decisions inside the PB. The night of horrors just wouldn't end with Szoboszlai giving the ball away which resulted in Atalanta's third goal, putting the game to bed in the process.

Klopp can take solace in history, Liverpool did beat Atalanta 5-0 four years ago in the Champions League.
