South Point is poised on a landmark threshold – on the cusp of both a historic and a happy moment. The foundation stone that was laid seven decades ago has since been nurtured by countless caring hands, hearts and minds. And now it’s time to celebrate the institution’s Platinum Jubilee, starting today, 1 April 2023 -- and bringing curtains down on it with a grand finale on 1 April 2024.
Here is a School that has – since 1 April 1954 – witnessed sweeping changes, internalised them and grown exponentially. Founded by Shri Satikanta Guha and Smt. Prity Lata Guha on a quaint stretch of Mandeville Gardens, South Point has imbued excellence in standards of academics and extracurricular activities, in drawing the best of faculty and, of course, in opening its doors to children from vast swathes of Calcuttans. Progress and achievements have since reached incredible summits on the strength of an exceptional vision and mission as well as an untiring effort to incorporate the new without bypassing the old.
Since 1992, the M. P. Birla Group under its then Chairman, Smt. Priyamvada Birla, has undertaken the responsibility of running the School, bringing in fresh energy and a fresher work ethos with a professional touch.
Seven decades since 1950s are an extraordinary leap in both time and experiences. When South Point celebrated its Golden and Diamond Jubilees, one looked forward to the Platinum Jubilee. How will it look? What more should we do? What new can we present? And thoughts thus spiralled on and on...
Now, beginning 1 April 2023, South Point is to walk on the momentous path of celebration again. Seventy years. The Platinum Jubilee. The School is raring to put together a wondrous posy of activities, programmes, projects, initiatives, drives and much more – involving students, parents, teachers, staff-members in this glittering journey from one milestone to another.
The yearlong festivity will start with a crucial tribute to environment – an extensive tree plantation ceremony on the first day of April. Other ventures include a video presentation commemorating 70 years; introducing a brand- new Kalakosh event; a fete; a marathon; felicitating celebrity alumni; putting together a memorabilia pack that will include a special publication; as well as creating a new Time Capsule. Throughout the year, the School will take up many student-friendly and eco-friendly initiatives. The Biennial Exhibition is set to specially display the seven-decade-long journey. Also, true to the School’s spirit of reaching out, the Platinum Jubilee reinforces its social welfare spectrum with myriad drives for staff-members and underprivileged students.
Meanwhile, the long-cherished and grand dream of the Priyamvada Birla Campus of South Point is taking shape at Mukundapur. All efforts are meticulously on to expedite the work at the site and prepare for the precious housewarming; and they will certainly gain momentum in the Platinum Jubilee year. Moving into the futuristic and bustling campus is going to get a shot in the arm over the coming years.
Twelve months choc-a-bloc with special events, overflowing with festive splendour. And the journey will surely be one of its kind with the support and cooperation of everyone associated with South Point. We look forward to take longer strides together, with all our stakeholders - students, teachers and staff, guardians & alumni.
