The 9th Explorers’ Day Celebration was successfully held on 9th June 2026 at the NCC Training Institute in Kolkata. The event honoured the spirit of exploration through tributes, speeches, felicitations, and audio-visual presentations.

The celebration brought together eminent delegates, dignitaries, and seasoned explorers from mountaineering, trekking, and other adventure domains, reflecting the deep connection between Indian mountaineering communities and the heritage of exploration.

The event commenced with a Welcome Address delivered by the Honorary General Secretary of the Institute of Exploration, Shri Md. Nabi Tarafdar, setting the tone for the day’s proceedings.

The traditional lamp-lighting ceremony was performed by eminent delegates, symbolizing the illumination of knowledge and the enduring spirit of exploration.

Smt. Bandana Chakraborty Samajder presented a speech on the topic “Concept of Explorers’ Day – One Thought,” articulating the philosophical and cultural dimensions of exploration.

Shri Avijit Basu delivered a heartfelt tribute to the legendary explorers George Mallory and Andrew “Sandy” Irvine, whose 1924 Everest expedition remains one of the most enduring mysteries in mountaineering history. This tribute resonated deeply with the audience.

Key dignitaries called to the dais:
Shri Kankan Kr. Roy, President, WBMTC (Confederation)
Shri Debdas Nandy, Advisor, WBMASF
Shri Debraj Dutta, Chairman, IMF East Zone
Dr. Jayanta Ranjan Mukherjee, Vice President, IE

The dignitaries delivered speeches highlighting the importance of exploration, adventure sports, and the role of organizations like IMF, WBMASF, and WBMTC in promoting Himalayan expeditions.

Four distinguished explorers were felicitated for their contributions:

1. Shri Tapan Pandit – For leading exploratory missions in remote regions.
2. Shri Nirapada Mullick, aged 90 years – For notable mountaineering achievements. He was a summiteer of the first ascent of Mt. Tirsuli (7,074 m).

4. Shri Tapas Chowdhury – For diversified adventure and sea exploration. He is a recipient of the "Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Award" for Water Adventure.

Smt. Sayantani Mahapatra, Team Leader, shared an engaging presentation on an exploratory expedition traversing from Chaumashi to Trijuginarayan in Uttarakhand, showcasing the geographical and cultural richness of the region.

Shri Ardhendu Sekhar Naskar delivered the Vote of Thanks, acknowledging the contributions of organizers, participants, and supporters.

The 9th Explorers’ Day Celebration was a meaningful tribute to the spirit of exploration, bringing together seasoned adventurers, dignitaries, and enthusiasts in Kolkata. The event not only honoured historical explorers like Mallory and Irvine but also celebrated contemporary pioneers in mountaineering, trekking, and sea exploration. Through speeches, felicitations, and expedition presentations, the programme highlighted the enduring significance of exploration in Himalayan and global adventure culture.

Special thanks to Smt. Sayantani Mahapatra for conducting the event smoothly.

"Jhargram Aranyo Sundori Run 2026"– A Run for the Forests

On this World Environment Day, we celebrate more than just nature — we celebrate our resolve to protect it.

The Indian Mountaineering Foundation, East Zone, in association with Kharagpur Sports Foundation, proudly hosted the "Jhargram Aranyo Sundori Run 2026" on 7th June 2026. As dawn broke over Jhargram, 291 passionate runners 126 women and 165 men — set off from Jhargram Stadium in staggered groups from 6:30 AM, embracing the lush green trails of our “Aranyo Sundori”.

This was not just a race. It was a stride towards awareness. A run through the forest, for the forest.

Medals, certificates, cash prizes and mementos honoured our finishers and winners at the prize ceremony held at 8:55 AM. We were privileged to have Shri Soumen Sarkar, Everester, along with the Secretaries of Jhargram Tourism Association, Jhargram Hotel Association, and Shri Pallab Das, Secretary, IMF East Zone, who inspired participants with their words on eco-tourism and conservation.

The Aranyo Sundori Run reminded us that every step we take in nature should leave behind only footprints — and take forward a message of sustainability.

Let us continue to explore responsibly, run mindfully, and preserve the wilderness that calls us home.

Happy World Environment Day!
