ARTHRITIS is a degenerative disease of the joints which may not be bothersome in the beginning as it presents with very mild symptoms ,but later on progresses into a Very painful condition and can even lead to Deformities in the Joints.
Can be unilateral( affecting one side) or bilateral (affecting both sides of the body)
Symptoms -
1)Gradually progressing Pain which can later on become so excruciating that the person may not be able to walk.
2) Intolerance to Cold - any exposure to cold environment can trigger extreme pain and stiffness of the joints .
3) Stiffness of the joints
4) Deformities
Types -
A) Osteoarthritis- Age related / injury related . Progressive degeneration of the joint cartilage and lining
Can be Effect one side of the body
Joints commonly affected- knee joint , hip joint etc.
B) Rheumatoid Arthiritis - Autoimmune condition ( where the body attacks its own cells and causes inflammation and damage )
Mostly is SYMMETRICAL ( will affect both sides of the body )
Joints affected - small joints ( starts from these joints ) and can progress to other
Like - small joints of the fingers can be starting point and later progresses to the WRIST JOINT and then moving on to the ELBOW JOINT and then to the SHOULDER JOINT .
PREVENTION and TREATMENT-
1) Avoid exposure to cold
Keep the room / surroundings of the affected individuals WARM
2) Avoid sitting cross legged , squatting
( sit with legs straight)
3) Decrease / avoid usage of stairs which can increase the pain
4) Active lifestyle and weight reduction should be given importance
5) healthy intake - fruits , veggies rich in ANTIOXIDANTS will help in controlling the inflammation
- omega 3 intake ( FISH OIL)
- vit d
- vit c and collagen
- glucosamine in combination with Chondroitin sulphate / MSM may help
TREATMENT options -
1) DMARDS and anti inflammatory drugs
2) PRP INJECTIONS
3) Steroid therapy ( Oral / Intra-Articular)
