NIT Jamshedpur was established in 1960 in Jamshedpur, then in the state of undivided Bihar, as the Regional Institute of Technology, Jamshedpur. It was among the first eight Regional Engineering Colleges (RECs) established as part of the Second Five-Year Plan (1956–1961) and the only REC which was set as an institute of technology rather than a college of engineering at that time.
