: Major General Sunil Kumar Razdan, KC, VSM (1954–2026)
The nation mourns the passing of Major General Sunil Kumar Razdan, KC, VSM, India’s first wheelchair-bound Major General, who left behind an extraordinary legacy of leadership, sacrifice, and unbreakable resolve.
His last rites will be performed at Brar Square, Delhi Cantonment, on August 14, 2026, at 12:00 PM.
A Defining Legacy of Service & Sacrifice
The Battlefield: On his 40th birthday in 1994, while serving with the 7th Battalion, The Parachute Regiment (7 Para), he led a 12-hou
r counter-insurgency operation in Kulgam, J&K, successfully saving 14 hostages. Despite sustaining severe gunshot wounds to his abdomen and spine that resulted in permanent paraplegia, he continued directing his troops until safety was secured.
The Honors: For his supreme gallantry, he was awarded the Kirti Chakra—India's second-highest peacetime gallantry award.
The Comeback: Refusing to let paralysis end his military career, he returned to active duty in strategic assignments and counter-insurgency training, proving that leadership and strategic intellect transcend physical limitations.
Military History: In 2010, he was promoted to Major General, becoming the first wheelchair-bound officer in the Indian Armed Forces to achieve the two-star rank.
