For centuries, women have been considered the ‘other’ gender. The story of women of the Eastern Himalayas also sings the same biased song. They live on impolite hills and make them their home- for the men and the children and the old. Their hands haul in wood and work without respite on God’s good earth. They scrub kitchen floors and nurse several fevered heads. They have worn blisters and had too many calluses on her hands to show. We see all they have done for others, and the kindness only a women’s heart could lend. It is not too farfetched to say that there still exists a bias towards men in marriages in our tribal societies; while women should be respected, protected and kept happy by their husbands, they are instead kept under constant vigilance. Whereas, as a child, a girl remains in the custody and care of her parents, after marriage she becomes the property of her husband, sold for a price like a dispensable commodity.
There also remains a strong bias against women in our patriarchal society where although women enjoy many freedoms, they have no rights. When a husband or father dies, his ancestral property is passed down to the eldest son, while the wife or daughters receive little to no financial benefits. Although there are laws in place to ensure legal protection for women's rights to inheritance, the enforcement of such laws are still challenges when a woman is refused her rights by the family and when she is not confident or educated enough to claim what is rightfully hers.
