The European Championship kicked off in Vrnjacka Banja
The European Individual Chess Championship (EICC) commenced on Friday in Vrnjačka Banja, Serbia. In the first round, players from the top half of the ratings were paired against those from the lower half, resulting in several victories for the favorites. However, there were also a few exceptions to this pattern. The tournament was inaugurated with the symbolic first move of the game between Vuk Damjanovic and Gabriel Sargissian, the top seed, made by Zurab Azmaiparashvili, the President of the European Chess Union, and Dragan Lazic, the President of the Serbian Chess Federation.
