The big hitters will have a long iron in for their second. Going at it brings the hollow right of the green into play, and the chip from down there is played back up a slope.

Laying up takes the hollow out and takes a shot with it. On Friday afternoon that call will be made off the leaderboard rather than off the yardage.

No cards, no scores. Players spend the day hitting from the bunkers and rough they intend to avoid, and putting from places they hope never to be.

On a course with seven tiered greens most of that time goes on the putting surfaces. The 12th has three tiers and the pin can sit on any of them, which means learning three greens rather than one.
