Phool Dei is a vibrant spring festival celebrated across the Kumaon and Garhwal regions of Uttarakhand. It marks the first day of the Hindu month of Chaitra (usually mid-March) and serves as a formal welcome to the spring season.

The Ritual of "Dei"
The festival is primarily led by young children, known as Phoolyari.
Doorstep Decoration: Early in the morning, children go from house to house carrying wicker baskets filled with flowers, rice, and jaggery.
The Offering: They sprinkle flowers and rice on the doorsteps (the Dei) of their neighbors while singing traditional folk songs.
The Prayer: The act is believed to bring good luck, prosperity, and a "flowering" of happiness to every household in the village.

Ghughutiya, also known as Kale Kauwa in Kumaon, is primarily celebrated on the occasion of Makar Sankranti. The main reasons for its celebration are as follows:

Legend and King Kalyan Chand: According to popular legend, the life of King Kalyan Chand of Kumaon's son, Nirbhay Chand (affectionately called Ghughuti), was saved by crows.
To express gratitude to the crows, the queen started the tradition of making 'Ghughute' (sweet dishes) and feeding them to the crows.

Seasonal Change: This festival marks the end of the Paush month and the beginning of Magh, when the sun enters Uttarayan and the days begin to lengthen.

Arrival of Migratory Birds: This time also coincides with the arrival of crows and other birds in the mountains. Children calling out to the crows conveys a message of love for nature and birds.

Cultural Tradition: On this day, 'Ghughute' are made from flour and jaggery, which are strung together into garlands. Children wear these garlands around their necks and call out to the crows in the morning, saying, "Kale Kauwa Kale, Ghughuti Mala Kha Le" (Black crow, black crow, eat the Ghughuti garland).
