International Cricket Council (ICC) organized a Media Mentorship Programme for the young and aspirant female journalists during the semi-final match of the ICC Women’s World Cup 2025 between England and South Africa at the ACA Stadium in Guwahati on October 29, 2025. The programme was mentored by ICC media official Sipokazi Sokanyile and attended three mentees from Assam— Pranami Khanikar, Shubhamita Bhattacharjee and Sharmishtha Gogoi.
During the programme, the participants gained valuable hands-on experience in sports journalism, including observing the game from the media box, interacting with commentators and ICC officials, and attending the post-match press conference.
Taking this opportunity Assam Sports Journalists Association (ASJA) expressed its gratitude to the International Cricket Council for taking this important initiative to mentor and train young reporters of the State. Such programmes will inspire and empower aspiring journalists to build successful careers in sports media in the future.

TOPCEM-ASJA Media Sports Festival from Dec 10

Guwahati; 4th Dec 2024: The Assam Sports Journalists’ Association (ASJA) is going to organize the TOPCEM-ASJA Media Sports Festival 2024-25 in Guwahati from the 10th to 21st of December 2024. The venue will be RG Baruah Sports Complex, B Borooah Road, Ulubari, Guwahati.
The TOPCEM-ASJA Media Cricket tournament will be played among 4 teams involving working mediapersons – ASJA XI, Electronic Media, Gauhati Press Club and Media Management – on the 10th and 11th of December 2024 at Nehru Stadium. The teams can correspond with Tauhid Ali Talukdar (9864091495) or Kausav Baruah (9854054037/8724842804) for further details.
It will be followed by the Harendra Nath Baruah inter-media football (7-a-side) tournament on the 12th of December 2024 at Nehru Stadium. Participating teams can contact Partha Chakraborty (9864036784) to confirm entries.
As far as badminton, table tennis and chess are concerned, the Badaruddin Ahmed Inter-Media Table Tennis Championship will be held at ABITA Indoor Stadium on the 16th of December 2024, while the badminton tournament will be held at Kanaklata Indoor Stadium on the 17th and 18th of December 2024. For participation in badminton and table tennis, players can contact Rajdeep Das (8011160044/9854514749) or Abdul Gani (8473946153/9859124876). The chess tournament will be held on the 20th of December 2024. Participants can contact Mridumoloy Lukhurakhon (9864080987/7002038412) or Imtiaz Ahmed (9435140126/9101408009).
The prize distribution ceremony of all the events will be held at Nehru Stadium, Guwahati at 2 pm on the 21st of December 2024.

OIL-ASJA Sports Awards presented
GUWAHATI, Sep 15: The Assam Sports Journalists’ Association conferred the OIL-ASJA Sports Awards 2023 to various achievers of the year 2023 at a glittering presentation ceremony at Landmark Hotel in Guwahati on Sunday.
Awards were conferred on Lovlina Borgohain (Boxing - Best Sportsperson of the Year), Bornil Akash Changmai (Badminton) and Bedabrat Bharali (Weightlifting – both Best Junior Sportspersons of the Year), and Assam Senior Cricket Team (Best Team of the Year) for its outstanding performance in Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy T20 Tournament in 2023. The Lifetime Achievement Award was conferred upon Pabitra Gogoi for his dedicated service to Sports and Sports Journalism.

Besides, Special Achievement Awards were conferred on Uma Chetry (Cricket), Apurna Narzary (Football) and Mehdi Hassan (Athletics). Chess player Mayank Chakraborty and Table Tennis Divija Paul were presented the Promising Sportspersons awards.

A jury, comprising senior sports journalists and sports organizers, had selected the awardees of the year taking into consideration the achievements of sportspersons from Assam in different arena. All the awards carried cash prizes along with citations, mementos etc. Although the awards were supposed to be presented in the second fortnight of April, it had to be deferred due to various constraints, including natural calamity in the state and the Paris Olympics.

Assam PHED and Tourism Minister Jayanta Mallabaruah, who is also the president of Assam Athletics Association, attended the programme as the chief guest. He also handed over the Best Sportsperson of the Year Award to Lovlina. In his speech, the minister highlighted the role played the sports journalists in shaping the future of players. Baruah also mentioned about various initiatives of the state government to uplift the sports infrastructure in Assam.
“Initiatives like Khel Maharan has been one of the major initiatives. In a state like Assam, 40 lakh youths have participated in this event,” he said.
Minister Mallabaruah appreciated the initiative of the Assam Sports Journalists’ Association to encourage and motivate sportspersons of the state.
Accepting the award, Lovlina thanked the sports journalists for motivating her to do well. “I’m extremely happy and glad to have received the award today. The role played by the sports journalists is very important. It’s because of you that people know me today and because of so many positive news about sports. Parents these days want their kids to play,” Lovlina added.

Former international table tennis player and a top official of OIL Arunjyoti Baruah who was present on the occasion. He applauded the Assam Sports Journalists' Association (ASJA) for encouraging the young achievers and he said OIL is glad to be a part in this initiative. "I assure you all that Oil India Ltd will continue to be associated with this initiative," he added.

Before the start of the programme tributes were paid to former India international footballer Tashen Bora who had passed away on Saturday. ASJA Chairman Subodh Malla Baruah gave the welcome speech.
The OIL-ASJA Sports Awards 2023 is sponsored by Oil India Ltd, Numaligarh Refinery Ltd, State Bank of India and Govt of Assam.

Commonwealth Games gold medal winner lawn bowls player Nayanmoni Saikia, former captain of India volleyball team Abhijit Bhattacharya, former international swimmer Mithoo Barooah, former bureaucrats and sports organizers Swapnanil Barua and Rajib Prakash Baruah among others were present and they also gave away the prizes.

*WRNE annex TOPCEM-ASJA Inter-school/academy cricket title*

*Guwahati, March 27, 2024:* WeRNorthEast emerged champions defeating South Point School by 58 runs in the final of the 3rd TOPCEM-ASJA Inter-School/Cricket Coaching Centre Under-16 Cricket Tournament that was played at Nehru Stadium in Guwahati on Wednesday.

Winning the toss, South Point School opted to field first. WeRNE posted 157 losing all the wickets in 40 overs with the help of Akhtar Hussain’s 27 and Manish Mahato’s 25. Extras were the highest contributor to the board with 43 runs for WeRNE though.

Rahul Tamuli of South Point notched up 4 wickets for 48 runs in 8 overs.

In reply, South Point batters faltered to be bundled out for a paltry total of 99 in 26.5 overs. Bhim Chetry wreaked havoc with a fifer. Abhinav Chowdhury (25) and Darmiyan (23) showed some determination in the middle but that was not enough. Arman Ali also picked up 2 wickets.

Individual awards: Player of the final: Bhim Chetry; Best fielder: Rahul Tamuli; Best bowler: Bhim Chetry; Best batter: Darmiyan; Player of the tournament: Bhim Chetry; Hattrick special award: Arman Ali.

*TOPCEM-ASJA Media Festival prizes presented*

During the presentation ceremony of the school/coaching centre tournament, the prizes of the TOPCEM-ASJA Inter-Media Sports Festival, that took place under the banner of Assam Sports Journalists’ Association from March 2 to 20, were also presented on Wednesday.

President (Sales & Marketing), TOPCEM Cement Dr Anil Kapoor, veteran sports organizer and founder of ASJA Balendra Mohan Chakravarty, ASJA Chairman Subodh Malla Barua, The Assam Tribune’s Executive Editor PJ Baruah, veteran sports organizers Taher Ahmed and Rajib Prakash Baruah along with Arjuna Awardee Lawn Bowls Player Nayan Moni Saikia graced the occasion.

Rituraj Barthakur of The Assam Tribune has been awarded as the most valuable player of the sports festival for reaching most of the finals.

Debashish bags chess title in Media Sports Fest
GUWAHATI, March 6: Debashish Sinha of The Assam Tribune emerged champion in the Inter-Media Chess Championships of the TOPCEM-ASJA Media Sports Festival 2024 held at Landmark Hotel, Guwahati on Wednesday.
Debashish tallied a total of four and half points out of a total of five points in the championships organized in Swiss League format for the top slot. Armanur Rahman of G Plus and Bubul Sinha of The Assam Tribune finished first and second runners-up tabling 4 and 3.5 points respectively.
Debashsish and Bubul settled for a keenly-fought draw in the fifth round that served the purpose of a decider for the champion. On the other hand, Armanur, a first time competitor in the annual championships, played outstanding endgames keeping his composure to outwit all his opponents except Debashish.
The daylong championships was opened by veteran journalist and author as well as Editor-in-Chief of NortheastLive television channel Wasbir Hussain, who also participated in the championship as a player to finish sixth in the table.
The Harendra Nath Baruah Inter-Media Football Championship will be held on March 18 while the TOPCEM-ASJA Inter-Media T20 Cricket Championships will begin on March 19.

Double crown to Debojit Dutta; Pallabika wins women’s title

Guwahati, 4th March: Debojit Dutta bagged double crown, while Pallabika Baruah of All India Radio annexed the women’s singles title in the Badaruddin Ahmed Trophy Inter-Media Table Tennis Championship of the TOPCEM-ASJA Media Sports Festival 2024 held at ABITA Indoor Stadium here on Monday.
Dutta of Asom Aditya won the men’s singles title overcoming the veteran PJ Baruah of The Assam Tribune 3-1 (11-9, 11-5, 6-11, 11-7) in the men’s single final. He went on to bag men’s team event title representing Assam Sports Journalists’ Association (ASJA).
In the men’s team event final, ASJA defeated The Assam Tribune 2-1 for the coveted title. After Rituraj Borthakur went down to Ranjit Rai of ASJA 10-12, 11-6, 6-11, The Assam Tribune tandem of Borthakur and PJ Baruah notched up the doubles game against Rai and Diganta Buragohain of ASJA 3-0 (11-8, 11-9, 11-3). However, Debojit Dutta clinched the decider singles against PJ Baruah 11-6, 11-9, 11-7.
In the women’s singles, Pallabika Baruah overcame initial challenge from Preety Priyadarshini of CNN News18 for an 11-13, 11-4, 11-7 straight set victory in the summit clash.
Earlier, the championship was inaugurated by donor of the trophy and son of Badaruddin Ahmed, Md Taher Ahmed, in presence of Executive Editor of The Assam Tribune, PJ Baruah, and President of Guwahati Press Club, Sushmita Goswami, among others.
The third event of the TOPCEM-ASJA Media Sports Festival, Chess, will be held at Landmark Hotel from 10.30 am on 6th March 2024 (Wednesday).

Gyan, Reshma clinch titles in Inter Media Badminton
GUWAHATI, March 3: TOPCEM-ASJA Inter Media Sports Festival, organised by the Assam Sports Journalists’ Association (ASJA), got under way at the Kanaklata Indoor Stadium in the city on Sunday.
The competition was held in men and women singles along with team (men) events. Gyan Ranjan Bora (Prag News) and Syeda Reshma Haider (North East Live) won the men’s and women’s singles title. Bora defeated his teammate J Ash*t Chetia in the men’s final while Rinju Kalita (Prag News) lost the women’s final to Haider.
In the team event, Prag News upset defending champion The Assam Tribune in the title clash.
Meanwhile the Badaruddin Ahmed Table Tennis Competition will begin on Monday. The event will be held at the ABITA indoor stadium in the RG Baruah Sports Complex. The festival will also comprise inter-media chess, football and T20 cricket.
