Sikkim’s Daughter Susmita Rai Represents India at SAFF U-19 Women’s Championship

Pokhara, Nepal | 31 January 2026

It is a moment of great pride for the state of Sikkim as Ms. Susmita Rai, a professional football official from Namchi, Sikkim, has been selected to represent India as an Assistant Referee at the South Asian Football Federation (SAFF) U-19 Women’s Championship.

The prestigious international tournament is being held in Pokhara, Nepal, from 31 January to 7 February 2026, featuring emerging women football talents and match officials from South Asian nations. Ms. Rai’s selection reflects her high level of competence, dedication, and professionalism in football officiating.

Ms. Susmita Rai has expressed her sincere gratitude to the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Sikkim for the continued support and assistance extended to her, which has been instrumental in her professional journey and achievement at the international level.

Her achievement not only brings honor to Sikkim but also serves as an inspiration to aspiring referees and sportspersons across the state. The Government and people of Sikkim extend their best wishes to Ms. Rai for her role in the ongoing championship.

Referee Refresher and Upgradation Course 2026 commences in Pakyong District, Sikkim.
The inaugural ceremony of the Referee Refresher and Upgradation Course 2026, organised by the Pakyong District Football Association (PDFA) under the aegis of All India Football Federation and Sikkim Football Association, was held at St Xavier School, Pakyong, today.
The programme was graced by Principal, St Xavier's School, Pakyong, Reverend Father Marcelino Sukden Lepcha as the chief guest.
The course, scheduled from January 24 to January 26, aims to refresh and upgrade referees’ knowledge, fitness, and officiating skills in line with current football rules.
During the session, Chief Referees Instructor of AIFF and Head of Referees, Sikkim, Mr Chamchuk Lama encouraged the participants to make the most of the opportunity and actively participate in the sessions. He also stated that the course would include sharing of practical officiating experiences to enhance understanding of the Laws of the Game.
Likewise, President, Pakyong District Football Association (PDFA) cm DFO (T), Mr S P Bhutia, expressed his happiness at seeing participants coming from far-off places. He thanked the Sikkim Football Association (SFA) for providing the platform and stated that PDFA, being a young association, has been undertaking various initiatives to promote football in the district.
He reminded the aspirants that their presence at the course was driven by passion and urged them to remain focused on learning and performing well throughout the programme. He further stated that football is a democratic sport and encouraged the participants to carry forward their passion for the game.
Emphasising that every sport is governed by laws, he highlighted that the course aims to educate referees on the Laws of the Game and help them become well-informed officials. He also encouraged the aspirants to exchange ideas and expressed hope to see them officiating at the international level in the future.

The four days "Sikkim Referees Refresher Course cm Upgradation examination-2025", under the aegis of Sikkim Football Association, and with the support of All India Football Federation and Gyalshing District Football Association, was successfully concluded on 16th April, 2025 in the presence of dignitaries from SFA, and local gentries from West District at Kyongsa play ground, Geyzing.
