Our ancestors didn’t track calories and protein. So why were they so active?
Before my 40 day Bali trip, I was around 77 kg.
During those 40 days, I ate plenty of food outside.
🍔 Junk food
🍰 Desserts
🍜 Restaurant meals
🥗 Healthy food too
I didn’t track calories.
But when I came back, I was 75 kg.
So what changed?
My daily movement.
I was walking, exploring, swimming, travelling and spending much more time physically active throughout the day.
And this is something most people trying to lose weight completely overlook.
Today, the average Indian lifestyle has become increasingly sedentary.
💻 8–10 hours sitting at work
🚗 Driving instead of walking
🪑 Sitting for most of the day
🏋️ 1 hour of gym
📱 Then sitting again for the rest of the day
Going to the gym for one hour doesn’t automatically make you physically active.
This is where NEAT (Non Exercise Activity Thermogenesis) matters.
NEAT is the energy you burn through everyday movement outside structured exercise, walking, standing, household activities, commuting, taking stairs and simply moving throughout your day.
For fat loss and weight loss, your total daily activity matters not just your workout.
That’s why you don’t necessarily need to exercise for hours.
Instead, increase your movement throughout the day:
🚶 Walk more
👣 Increase daily steps
🪜 Take the stairs
⏰ Take movement breaks during work
🚶 Walk after meals
🏋️ Strength train consistently
🏏 Play a sport or stay active outside the gym
And there’s another major difference between our ancestors’ lifestyle and modern life.
Today’s environment gives us much easier access to ultra processed foods, sugary foods, refined carbohydrates and highly calorie dense foods, while our work and transportation often require much less physical movement.
So don’t blindly copy your ancestors.
Understand what made their lifestyle different.
