5 Social Ethics for a Peaceful Life
In Yoga philosophy, there are five social ethics, known as the Yamas, that guide us towards a peaceful, balanced, and meaningful life.
They are:
1. Ahimsa – Non-harming
2. Satya – Truthfulness
3. Asteya – Non-stealing
4. Brahmacharya – Moderation & Self-control
5. Aparigraha – Non-attachment
✨ Let’s understand what they really mean.
1. 🌱 Ahimsa – Non-harming
Ahimsa means not harming or hurting anyone—including ourselves and nature—through our actions, words, or thoughts.
We should practice kindness, compassion, and respect towards all living beings.
2. 🕊️ Satya – Truthfulness
Satya means being honest, genuine, and truthful in our words and actions.
We should communicate honestly while also being kind and respectful, and always try to follow the right and ethical path.
3. 🤝 Asteya – Non-stealing
Asteya means not taking anything that does not belong to us.
It includes not stealing physical things, ideas, credit, or even someone's precious time through unnecessary conversations or interruptions.
Respect what belongs to others.
4. 🧘 Brahmacharya – Moderation & Self-control
Brahmacharya teaches us to use our physical and mental energy wisely and practise self-control over our senses and desires.
Instead of wasting our energy, we should channel it towards positive, meaningful, and higher goals and walk on the path towards the Supreme Self.
5. 🌸 Aparigraha – Non-attachment
Aparigraha means letting go of greed, excessive possessions, and unnecessary attachments.
It teaches us to take what we truly need, avoid hoarding, and learn to let go of rigid thoughts and material attachments.
✨ Let go of greed.
✨ Take only what you need.
✨ Live simply.
✨ Think deeply.
When we practise these five principles in our daily lives, we can create more peace within ourselves and more harmony in the world around us.
🌿 Follow the Yamas. Live with awareness. Act with integrity. Live a peaceful and meaningful life.
Thank you! 🙏
