So you are trying to fix your back, you start to see improvement, the pain is almost gone and then you STOP because you aren’t as driven to keep working since the pain is reduced. What happens then? You try to get back into normal life, hit the gym, play sport, and then BOOM it all starts over and you feel trapped.

The key here is that when the pain is gone, that is when the real rehab begins!

You need to be consistent in the pain-reduction stage, but then once the pain dissipates you need to be even more consistent with the return to performance stage so you can keep making progress and make a successful return to 100% activity!
Don’t just stop when you feel better, that is a trap that you can get stuck in that can prolong your recovery for months or years! Stay consistent, don’t drop the ball, your health is worth it!

“Mummy Tummy” aka diastasis recti affects 60% of women during pregnancy and postpartum. This is when the large abdominal muscles separate during pregnancy, which can create a bulge which can last for months or even years postpartum.

To check for separation, lie flat on your back and lift your head and shoulders off the floor. You should be able to feel the two straps of muscle running vertically along the midline of the abdomen. One or two fingers of space between the two straps is common postpartum.

Fortunately there are exercises you can do, and even professionals who specialize in healing from diastasis recti.

Quick fix approaches won’t work! You need to learn what movements will be the right ones for your condition, become educated on your condition, and have a movement-based plan to execute for actual results!

While foam rolling is an amazing tool to release tension from the muscles, you should avoid placing the roller directly under the lumbar spine area.

There are two main reasons why you should never foam roll the lower back:
1- Placing the foam roller right underneath your lower back can increase the anterior pelvic tilt postural imbalance.
If you have an exaggerated anterior pelvic tilt, you should focus more on releasing your hip flexors and strengthening your deep core muscles.
2- Unlike your mid-upper back that is protected by a rib cage, your lumbar spine is ‘exposed’ to more damage caused by pressure. If you’re suffering from any disc issue, placing direct pressure on the spine can cause more damage and pain.

Instead you should get a manual release done by a qualified sports physiotherapist on the paraspinal and QL muscle to get relief from back pain and understand what caused pain in your low back. Work on the root cause instead of just a quick fix with the gun.

Many people are worried about getting injured while working out or performing certain exercises. The reality is that there are no “bad” exercises, and developing fear of exercising will limit your activity and exposure to different movements and your body will become deconditioned to those movements and overall less fit!
There is nothing more harmful to you than avoiding exercise because then your health deteriorates and you are truly susceptible to not only physical injury, but many chronic diseases as well!

The key here is to not worry about any potential risks associated with exercising and rather focus on all of the many rewards associated with exercising. There can be some ups and downs sometimes and sure we will all get a little minor ni**le here and there while working out, but these will be short-lived and sacrificing the incredible benefits you get over a lifetime from exercising is not worth it!
Exercise with confidence and do not limit yourself to this incredible activity that will improve all areas of your life 10x over. The “risk” is worth it!

“The surgeon wants me to wait 6 weeks to start PT”

So many people have been beaten down by the traditional healthcare system. Many of you were told that your pain would last forever, and that these issues don’t heal. This thought pattern has the potential to warp your mind and cement a pain-state if you are not careful.
