Pradeep's World Record in Uttarakhand, runs 15280 KM cycle in 115 days journey

Uttarakhand's obsessive cyclist Pradip Rana (18) set a new guinness book world record for cycling on Friday. Even before reaching Jogendra Nagar of Himachal Pradesh, Pradeep broke the previous record of 15222 kms of 15223 kms. However, Pradeep's journey has not stopped yet. It is about 20,000 kilometers of cycling to create a new record. By Friday evening, Pradeep has completed a total of 15280 km cycles.

Graphic Era Hill University Dehradun BSc IT first year student Pradeep is basically a resident of Devanai village of Garuda tehsil of Bageshwar district. Pradeep started his first journey in the Deepawali holidays in 2016 by cycling 800 kilometers from Kathmandu to Dehradun. After this successful journey, he decided to make a record of cycling 20 thousand kilometers. Pradeep started on March 23, 2017 with the journey of Roorkee while traveling via Dehradun to Vaa Paaanta Sahib. Pradeep had reached Kullu on Thursday night, then his journey was 15120 km.

On Friday, on the 116th day of Kullu, Pradeep came out at eight o'clock in the morning. Pradeep broke the old world record in 123 hours of cycling in about eight hours between Kullu and Joginder Nagar. While going towards Joginder Nagar to Baijnath, Pradeep Rana told 'Hindustan' on the phone that his goal is to carry 20 thousand kilometers on a bicycle. Pradeep had reached Palampur late in the evening. On Saturday, he will move forward from here.

CM flags off cycle rally to save, educate the girl child.

With an aim create awareness among the people to save and educate the girl child, chief minister Trivendra Singh Rawat on Sunday flagged off the ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’ cycle rally from the city’s sprawling Police Line Maidan.

Women empowerment and child development minister Rekha Arya led the rally, which concluded at Haridwar, covering a distance of 55 km.

Speaking at the flag off ceremony, Rawat said Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao campaign from Haryana on January 21, 2015. “Some two years later positive results of the campaign have now started becoming visible,” he said. “The child s*x ratio in Haryana, which was heavily skewed against the girl child, has now started showing improvement,” he added. “There were 837 girls for 1,000 boys before the Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao campaign was launched in Haryana. It now stands at 950 girls for every 1,000 boys,” he further added.

Rawat said a similar campaign has now been launched from Dehradun in view of the child s*x ratio heavily skewed against the girl child in three districts of Uttarakhand namely Pithoragarh, Haridwar and Champavat.

“This heavily skewed child ratio against the girl child in these three districts is a matter of grave concern,” said Rawat and stressed on the need to carry out more campaigns like the cycle rally to improve the child s*x ratio.

According to an official release, Arya, along with 120 other cyclists including 30 girls, will travel to Haridwar. Prominent celebrities from the state — including Miss Uttarakhand Neha Raj, international cricketer Ekta Bisht and athlete Harendra — also participated in the cycle rally.

While addressing a huge gathering before embarking on the cycle rally, Arya said the Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao cycle rally would send a message across the mountain state. “It will help bring about an attitudinal change in favour of the girl child,” the minister said.

State BJP president Ajay Bhatt congratulated the minister for leading such a programme. “Women are already on the forefront and have started taking the lead on all spheres,” he said, citing the examples of recently appointed defence minister Nirmala Sitharaman and external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj.

Neha Raj, said that girls, if properly encouraged by the society, can also do the state proud like her.

After being criticised for her plan to block the National Highway-74 between Dehradun and Haridwar for a cycle rally scheduled on September 17, minister Rekha Arya has cut down her grandiose plan of pedalling with hundreds of participants.

Ruing that the event was ‘unnecessary politicised’, she said the objective of the cycle rally was not highlighted. “It’s saddening that the issue was politicised, and the noble intentions behind the rally was not communicated properly,” Arya said at a press conference.

The minister of state for women empowerment and child development planned to take hundreds of women from Doon to Haridwar in the rally for which she wanted one of the most important highways in the region to shut down for several hours. But now she will take along a little over a dozen professional cyclists without disturbing traffic.

Chief minister TS Rawat will flag off the rally at Police Lines that will reach the Vidhan Sabha on Haridwar Road. Rawat is likely to pedal with fellow cyclists to spread awareness on the ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’ campaign. The participating women cyclists in the age group of 18-45 years will disperse at the Vidhan Sabha, while she will continue with the professional cyclists till Shanti Kunj in Haridwar where local women will join the rally till the finishing line.

Cycling track in Paltan Bazaar? Cyclists, shopkeepers say, ‘Not a smart move’

Dehradun has finally made it to the central government's new list of 30 urban centres to be developed into 'smart cities'. The new proposal reportedly includes retrofitting of 10 wards in an area of 875 acres where water ATMs to dispense water, bio-toilets and energy-saving electric poles will be installed. As part of this proposal, a cycling track and a parking lot have also been proposed in Paltan Bazaar. The proposal hasn't gone down well with shopkeepers and cyclists who are not too pumped up with idea of having a cycling track in a market bustling with people.
'A CYCLING TRACK IN ONE OF THE MOST CROWDED AREAS OF THE CITY DOESN'T SEEM RIGHT'
Anuj Bali, a shopkeeper from Paltan Bazaar, says, "Paltan Bazaar is one of the most crowded areas of the city. The proposal to come up with a cycling track in the city raises a few concerns - will the footpath shops be cleared? Will they start lending cycles for strolling in the market? Are they planning to ban two-wheelers from the market? One of the biggest concerns is how can one have people riding bicycles in a crowded market like Paltan Bazaar, where one can't even walk properly!"
Another shopkeeper Rahul adds, "Mazaak laga mujhe jab maine pehli bar suna toh. J**s market mein government footpath se street vendors ko hata kar logon ke chalne ki jagah nahi bana paayi, wahan yeh cycling track kaise banayenge?''
"The whole idea apparently is to attract more and more tourists to the market. But, why will any tourist come to Paltan Bazar riding a bicycle? They will rather go to Rajpur or other hilly areas in the city for a joyride rather than cycling in the market. The government should first take action against squatters and ban two-wheelers in the market rather than coming up with a cycling track in such a crowded market," says Rahul.

To create awareness on environment, Nepali nuns cycle to Dehradun

Led by Gyalwang Drukpa of the Ladakh-based Drukpa Order, 250 monks and nuns, who cycled into India through the Banbassa checkpoint on July 3, arrived here on Saturday.
Every year, these monks and nuns undertake a 2500-km cycle expedition to Hemis monastery in Ladakh with an aim to spread awareness about environment conservation and combating gender stereotypes. Gyalwang Drukpa, who has been conferred the title 'Keeper of the Himalayas' by the United Nations, told TOI that they want to inspire people to be one with nature instead of being in a constant state of war with it.
Speaking about the expedition which started from Kathmandu on July 3, Gyalwang Drukpa said, "Himalayas have been the home of the Drukpa Lineage for over 1000 years now. Recently, the region has faced several environmental disasters that caused unwanted and unprecedented loss of life and created an imbalance in the ecosystem. The Himalayas and the earth were formed millions of years ago and it is our duty to respect them."
The 72-day expedition will pass through many states in north India including Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir before culminating at Hemis Monastery, 45 kilometres from Leh. The team is scheduled to arrive Ladakh prior to Naropa, 2016, or Himalayan Kumbh which is a spiritual festival that is held once in every 12 years to celebrate the birth anniversary of the Indian saint Naropa, patron of the Drukpa lineage.
Jigme Yeshe Lhamo, who is a part of the cycle yatra, told TOI, "This is the fourth expedition that we have undertaken. This time we are trying to spread the message of environmental conservation and women empowerment. That's the reason why we use cycles so that we can tell people that this is also a mode of transport which does not pollute the environment. In our expedition, the youngest is a 12-year-old and the oldest is 44-year-old."
