Sangeet Natak Akademi, New Delhi in association with Bharathiar Palkalaikoodam, Puducherry in the name of ‘PRAATIGYA’ presented a series of experiences shared by stalwarts in the field of performing arts.

The renowned Bharathanatyam Guru ‘Padmashri’ Smt. Kanaka Srinivasan participated in this grand event and showcased the intricate nuances of the ancient Vazhuvoor tradition of dance.

She further delighted the audience speaking on the contributions of her illustrious Guru ‘Padmashri’ Vazhuvoor Sri Ramaiah Pillai.

Smt Kanaka Srinivasan’s disciple and great grandson of Vazuvoor Sri Ramaiah Pillai, Vazhuvoor Sri S. Ramakrishnan rendered live demo of one of his Guru Smt Kanaka’s popular dance item the sacred ‘Sri Rudram’.

"நீரளவே ஆகுமாம் நீராம்பல் தான்கற்ற
நூலளவே ஆகுமாம் நுண்ணறிவு - மேலைத்
தவத்தளவே ஆகுமாம் தான்பெற்ற செல்வம்
குலத்தளவே ஆகும் குணம்."

என்பது ஔவையார் இயற்றிய மூதுரையில் இடம்பெற்றுள்ள ஒரு புகழ்பெற்ற பாடலாகும்.

இதற்கான விளக்கம்:
நீர் எவ்வளவு உயரத்திற்கு இருக்கிறதோ, அதே அளவுக்கு ஆம்பல் மலரின் தண்டு வளர்ந்து மலரும். நீர் குறைந்தால் ஆம்பலும் சிறியதாக இருக்கும். அதுபோல ஒருவர் எவ்வளவு தூரம் நூல்களைக் கற்று, கல்வியை ஆழமாகப் பெறுகிறாரோ, அதற்கேற்பவே அவரது அறிவு கூர்மையாக இருக்கும்.

மேலும் முற்பிறவியில் செய்த தவத்தின் அளவைப் பொறுத்தே இந்தப் பிறவியில் செல்வம் கிடைக்கும். ஒருவரின் குணம், அவர் பிறந்து வளரும் குடும்பச் சூழலைப் (குலம்) பொறுத்து அமையும்.

புத்தகம் படிப்பதை அனைத்து வயதினரும் பழக்கப்படுத்திக் கொள்ள வேண்டும். அறிவுலகத்தை அடைவதற்கு அது ஒன்றே வழி என்று மிகப் பிரமாதமாக பேசி நம்மையெல்லாம் இங்கே உற்சாகப்படுத்துகிறார் முன்னாள் காவல்துறை எஸ். பி உயர்திரு கலியமூர்த்தி அவர்கள். அவருக்கு எமது மனமார்ந்த நன்றியையும், பாராட்டுதல்களையும் தெரிவித்துக் கொள்கிறோம்...!

Guru Vazhuvoor Sri R. Samraj learnt to compose jati-s for dance from his illustrious father Vazhuvoor Sri B. Ramaiah Pillai. The jati korvai-s of Vazhuvoor School are very intricate. While the Nattuvanars of other schools recite the jati-s ‘samam’ to ‘samam’, Nattuvanars from Vazhuvoor School recite them from ‘samam’ to ‘edam’.

It was evident during many of Guru Samraj performances that even the most knowledgeable audiences froze in midair as they found it difficult to keep track of the tala structure in the natya jati-s rendered by him.

Guru Samraj himself has composed numerous such jati-s appropriate for the dance sequences. His sonorous and majestic rendering of the sollukattu added to its beauty and kept the audience spell bound. Perhaps he was the only one after his illustrious father in those days to have been gifted with rendering these natya jati-s to its original glory.

In his celebrated epic 'Malavikagnimitram', Kalidasa quotes a sloka from Natyasastra and showcases this principle through the character of Malavika, who perfectly balances technique with emotion to win the admiration of the court as below:

"Yatho Hasta thatho Drishti....

Yatho Drishti thatho Manah.....

Yatho Manah thatho Bhaava.....

Yatho Bhaava thatho Rasa....."

The English transliteration of the same goes like this:

Where the hand (hasta) goes, the eyes (drishti) should follow....

Where the eyes follow, the mind (manah) goes....

Where the mind goes, the emotions (bhaava) are generated....

Where the emotions are, the flavor/experience (rasa) is created....
