The Bamboo Research and Training Centre (BRTC) recently concluded a vibrant and insightful 'National Handicrafts Week 2025' at its facility in Chandrapur. This workshop served as a dynamic platform for knowledge sharing, expertly led by Marketing Manager Yogita Sathawane, Designer Kishor Gaikwad, and Training Guide Pravin Shivankar. Together with their dedicated support staff, they mentored a diverse group of participants, including hardworking women from various Self-Help Groups (SHGs) and enthusiastic students from the Diploma in Bamboo Technology program. Beyond just technical training, the week was a profound tribute to the cultural legacy of handmade crafts. Through hands-on guidance and storytelling, the team demonstrated how traditional bamboo skills bridge the gap between historical artistry and a modern, sustainable industry, empowering a new generation of artisans to carry this heritage forward with pride.

As part of their specialized training, a group of 84 Forest Guard trainees recently conducted an educational visit to the Bamboo Research and Training Centre (BRTC) in Chichpalli. The session commenced with an insightful lecture by retired RFO Mr. G. C. Meshram, who enlightened the trainees on bamboo cultivation techniques, identifying the most prominent species in India and their diverse classifications. Following the lecture, Mr. Kantilal Gajbiye, Head of the DBT Department, guided the group through the facility, showcasing the impressive main building which is uniquely constructed entirely from Bambusa balcooa. The experience culminated in a field visit to the Bamboo Setum, where Mr. Meshram introduced the trainees to a vast collection of over 90 different bamboo species, providing a practical look at the plant's biodiversity. The visit concluded on a high note with a commemorative group photo at the heart of the BRTC architectural landmark

The evening at the Bamboo Research and Training Center (BRTC) commenced with a sense of tradition and grace as our Director, Mr. M.N. Khairnar, lit the ceremonial lamps to inaugurate the festivities. The atmosphere was charged with pride during the medal ceremony, where the champions of our recent sports days were honored for their grit and exceptional performances. We were then privileged to hear an inspiring and valuable speech from APCCF M.S. Reddy Sir, whose words set a perfect tone for the night. The stage finally came alive as the talented students of the Diploma in Bamboo Technology took over, showcasing their incredible creativity through a series of vibrant cultural performances. A true celebration of talent, discipline, and the spirit of BRTC!

Bamboo highlighted as “Green Gold” for Sustainable Development

Chandrapur, December 16, 2025:
On the occasion of the Foundation Day of the Bamboo Research and Training Centre (BRTC), Chichpalli, a grand Sports, Cultural Festival and Research Symposium was successfully organized on 15th and 16th December 2025. With the objective of providing a dedicated and robust platform for bamboo research and innovation, a one-day Research Symposium was held on 16th December 2025 at the BRTC campus.
The inaugural ceremony of the symposium was graced by eminent dignitaries including Shri M. S. Reddy, IFS, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife), Maharashtra State; Dr. Madhavi Khode, IAS, Additional Divisional Commissioner, Nagpur; and Shri Nitin Vyavahare, Additional District Collector, as chief guests.
Welcoming the dignitaries and participants, Shri Manojkumar Khairnar, Director, BRTC, presented an overview of the Centre’s ongoing research initiatives, training programs, industrial linkages, and future vision for strengthening the bamboo sector.
In his presidential address, Shri M. S. Reddy, IFS, described bamboo as “Green Gold” and emphasized its vital role in climate change mitigation, green development, employment generation, and building a sustainable economy. He stressed the importance of collaboration among government departments, research institutions, and industries to accelerate the growth of bamboo-based enterprises.
Addressing the gathering, Dr. Madhavi Khode, IAS, referred to the recently announced Maharashtra Bamboo Industrial Policy 2025, highlighting bamboo as a key resource for livelihood generation, rural development, and green industries. She emphasized that BRTC should play a pivotal role in policy implementation through focused research, innovation, prototyping, skill development, and vocational training. She also underlined the need for market-oriented bamboo products, advanced processing research, and structured certification programs, while advocating the integration of bamboo education into formal academic curricula.
On this occasion, Dr. Khode also highlighted the MoU between Nagpur University and BRTC, stating that academic collaboration, joint research, internships, and certification programs would significantly promote bamboo technology and entrepreneurship. Her address reinforced BRTC’s role as a nodal institution in realizing the State’s bamboo development vision.
During the technical sessions, researchers and experts from across Maharashtra presented research papers on diverse themes such as value addition of bamboo handicrafts, development of bamboo preservatives using essential oils, AI and IoT-based smart bamboo cultivation, bamboo charcoal-based energy generation, life cycle assessment of bamboo and other construction materials, medicinal properties of bamboo species, and eco-friendly bamboo preservation techniques.
The symposium witnessed participation from several eminent experts including Shri Lalsingh (Senior Scientist, NEERI Nagpur), Dr. Prakash Itankar (Nagpur University), Dr. K. T. V. Reddy (Dean, Datta Meghe Medical Institution), Dr. A. N. Gupta (JD College of Engineering and Management, Nagpur), Shri Dinesh Lakade (Structural Expert, Wardha), Prof. Pramod Mahalle (DMIHER University), Shri Deep Verma (MGIRI Wardha), Dr. Prashant Tayade, Dr. Sandeep Joshi, Dr. Vijay Illorker, Ar. Ashish Nagpurkar (VNIT Nagpur), Ms. Nidhi Gandhi (Fashion Designer),Dr. Monikuntala Das (IIT Guwhati) and Dr. Tarika Dagadkar (SMMCA Nagpur), along with many other distinguished professionals and researchers.
The symposium delivered a strong message on the need to align research, policy, industry, and skill development to provide a new direction for the sustainable growth of the bamboo sector.
At the conclusion of the programme, Shri A. D. Mallewar, Forest Range Officer, proposed a vote of thanks, expressing gratitude to all dignitaries, researchers, speakers, participants, organizers, and the entire BRTC team. The programme was efficiently anchored by Ms. Sneha Mandekar. The organizers expressed confidence that the Research Symposium would serve as a significant milestone in promoting bamboo-based sustainable development in the State.

A brand-new Bamboo Products Sales Centre has been inaugurated at the Tadoba Navegaon Gate under the Bamboo Research & Training Centre, Chandrapur.
The centre was officially opened by Hon’ble Director of BRTC, Mr. Manoj Khairnar, marking a significant step in promoting bamboo-based livelihoods and crafts.
The event was also graced by Forest Range Officer, Madam Raut, highlighting the support of local authorities in empowering bamboo artisans and sustainable forestry initiatives.

A meeting of the Expert Committee was organized on 14th October 2025 at the Bamboo Research & Training Centre (BRTC), Chichpalli, to obtain approval from the Expert Committee (granted by MSBTE) for the curriculum prepared under the Diploma in Bamboo Technology Course, seeking its equivalence to the 12th Standard.

The meeting was attended by Mr. Ashish Nagpurkar, Senior Bamboo Architect and Expert from VNIT Nagpur; Mr. Manoj Khairnar, Director, BRTC; Mrs. Kanchan Mankar, Deputy Secretary, MSBTE, Divisional Office, Nagpur; Ms. Tarika Dagadkar, Education Expert; Mr. Gajanan Gotamare, Educational Consultant and NEP Expert; Mr. Ajinkya Shastrakar, Industry Expert; and all faculty members of BRTC.

The session began with a warm welcome and introduction by Mr. Manoj Khairnar, Director, BRTC, who also presented the ongoing initiatives and academic activities of the Centre. This was followed by a presentation of the First Semester Curriculum of the Bamboo Diploma Course by Mr. Gajanan Gotamare, who elaborated on the course’s alignment with the National Education Policy (NEP), its unique features, and the new academic pathways it creates for students pursuing higher education.

After a detailed discussion, the Expert Committee unanimously approved the First Semester Curriculum of the course. The committee further emphasized the importance of obtaining AICTE (All India Council for Technical Education) approval to ensure national-level recognition of the program. All expert members extended their full support and guidance to BRTC in this process.

The committee decided that the remaining three semester curricula should be developed by 15th November 2025, and that the next meeting would be scheduled after Diwali. It was also resolved that the complete curriculum should be submitted to the Maharashtra State Board of Technical Education (MSBTE) by 30th December 2025.

Today, a group of 68 students from Bramhapuri Polytechnic visited the Bamboo Research and Training Centre (BRTC), Chichpalli, as part of their educational exposure visit. The visit aimed to provide the students with practical knowledge about bamboo-based technologies, sustainable development practices, and the wide range of research and training activities conducted at the centre.
Upon arrival, the students were warmly welcomed by the officials and staff of the centre. They were then taken on a guided tour of the campus, during which they received detailed information about various bamboo processing units, including bamboo treatment, seasoning, product manufacturing, and value-added bamboo applications.
The technical experts at BRTC explained the importance of bamboo as an eco-friendly and renewable resource, its potential for livelihood generation, and its role in environmental conservation. Students were particularly interested in learning about bamboo construction materials, furniture design, handicrafts, and innovative uses of bamboo in modern industries.
During the interactive session, the centre’s representatives also shared insights into the training programs, research projects, and government initiatives related to bamboo entrepreneurship and skill development. The students asked several questions about the machinery, product development process, and scope for startups in the bamboo sector — all of which were answered in detail by the experts.
The visit concluded with an encouraging message from the BRTC team, emphasizing that today’s youth can play a vital role in promoting sustainable materials like bamboo and contributing to India’s green economy. The students expressed their appreciation for the informative session and the hands-on learning experience they received during the visit.

Refresher Training Program for Women of Common Facility Centers Concludes
Location: Pombhurna | Date: October 13, 2025
The Bamboo Research and Training Centre (BRTC), Chichpalli, successfully concluded a refresher training program aimed at empowering women working in the eight Common Facility Centers (CFCs) across Chandrapur district.
The primary objective of this training was to enhance women’s production efficiency, help them adopt innovative production techniques, increase output in less time, and strengthen their economic self-reliance through improved skills, technology, and design. Additionally, the program aimed to expand women’s participation in CFC activities and promote collective entrepreneurship.
Over the past fifteen days, women from the CFCs at Mul and Pombhurna received intensive hands-on training. A total of 20 women participated — 12 from Pombhurna and 8 from Mul. The sessions covered topics such as improving production skills, techniques for increasing output efficiency, new technologies and designs, and demonstrations of top-selling bamboo products.
At the valedictory ceremony, Mr. Manoj Khairnar, Director of BRTC, personally interacted with the participants, addressing their challenges and encouraging them to utilize their new skills for sustainable livelihood. He announced the concept of establishing multiple bamboo-based enterprises — such as bamboo craft production, agarbatti (incense stick) making, toothpick manufacturing, and carpet weaving units — all under one roof at Pombhurna. He assured continued institutional support for expanding CFCs to strengthen women’s self-employment and economic independence.
As part of the program, a health check-up was organized for the women participants. The event also marked the inauguration of a newly constructed office-cum-meeting hall at Pombhurna by Director Mr. Khairnar.

On October 16, 2025, Shri Nagesh Shingane, Principal of the National Fire College, Nagpur, visited the Bamboo Research and Training Centre (BRTC), Chichpalli, Chandrapur, following a request from the Centre seeking technical guidance and inspection of fire safety measures for its bamboo-based infrastructure.
During his visit, Shri Shingane engaged in a detailed discussion with Shri Manoj Khairnar, Director of BRTC, regarding the recent fire augmentation works carried out at the Centre. He conducted a comprehensive inspection of the fire safety systems installed across the premises and provided valuable technical suggestions to further enhance the safety and resilience of bamboo structures against potential fire hazards.
Shri Shingane also interacted with the fire-fighting team of the Centre, offering practical guidance on best practices, operational protocols, and emergency preparedness to ensure effective protection of bamboo buildings. He reviewed the fire-fighting infrastructure and emphasized the importance of maintaining continuous readiness and swift response capabilities.
In addition to fire safety, Shri Shingane shared special insights on the preservation and protection of bamboo buildings, stressing the need to adopt preventive measures that safeguard the Centre’s bamboo-based campus and research facilities, which are both unique and environmentally significant.
The inspection programme was attended by Smt. Yadav, Assistant Director, National Fire College, Shri Sheshrao Patil, Retired Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, the Range Forest Officer (RFO), Forest Guards, the fire-fighting team, and engineers from the Centre.
This visit by the Principal of the National Fire College marks a significant step toward establishing robust fire safety standards for bamboo-based infrastructure. The expert guidance provided during the inspection will contribute substantially to the long-term protection, safety, and sustainability of the Bamboo Research and Training Centre, Chichpalli.
