What if the vegetables in your grocery store were grown… right above your head?

At IGA Extra Famille Duchemin in Canada, is a 25,000-sq-ft rooftop farm growing food for the store below.

When the St-Laurent borough required buildings to install a green roof, co-owner Richard Duchemin didn’t see it as a rule. He saw a possibility.

Today the rooftop grows 35+ varieties of organic produce — from kale, lettuce and carrots to tomatoes, eggplants, garlic, spinach and green beans. There’s even a flower garden and beehives producing honey.

The farm is built with its irrigation system using water recovered from the store’s dehumidification system, which would otherwise go to waste.

And the best part?
The crops are harvested, packed and sold downstairs in the grocery store — often the very same day.

India consumes 31.3 million tonnes of LPG every year, and nearly 62% of it is imported.

As tensions escalate in West Asia and the conflict involving Iran disrupts global fuel supply routes, concerns around LPG shortages are beginning to surface across India.

Cities like Bengaluru, Mumbai and Chennai have already reported disruptions in the supply of commercial LPG cylinders used by restaurants and hotels.

At a time when global conflicts can ripple all the way into our kitchens, a small village in Punjab offers a powerful reminder of the strength of local solutions.

In Lambra Kangri village in Hoshiarpur district, 44 families have been cooking without LPG cylinders for nearly 10 years. Instead, their kitchens run on biogas made from cattle dung.

The idea came from villager Jaswinder Singh Saini, who once visited South Korea and saw how organic waste could be turned into energy.

Inspired, he returned home and worked with the Lambra Kangri Multipurpose Cooperative Society to set up a community biogas plant in 2016.

Today, the plant processes around 2,500 kg of cattle dung every day, producing methane gas that is piped directly into 44 homes.

Families now spend just ₹200–₹300 a month on cooking fuel — less than half the cost of an LPG cylinder.

Even the leftover slurry becomes nutrient-rich biofertiliser, making the system both sustainable and economically viable.

At a time when global geopolitics can disrupt energy supply thousands of kilometres away, Lambra Kangri quietly shows that sometimes the most reliable energy solutions are the ones produced closest to home.

“As a mother, you have the power to change your daughter’s future.”

Sunita Devi repeats this line in villages across Jharkhand while trying to stop child marriages.

Sunita herself was married at just 15. She loved studying, but marriage forced her to leave school overnight. Two years later, when she became a mother at 17, everything changed.

Looking at her newborn daughter, she made a promise:
her child would never become a child bride.

Determined to rewrite her story, Sunita convinced her husband and in-laws to let her continue her studies. As she stepped back into education, she began noticing how many girls around her were still being married off before adulthood.

At first, she quietly informed child helplines whenever she heard about a child marriage. But slowly, she found the courage to intervene herself.

She began counselling families, speaking to village leaders, and persuading parents to rethink decisions that could change a girl’s life forever.

For nearly 15 years, Sunita has been working at the grassroots to prevent child marriages. Today, she works with Parivar Vikas Chandrashekhar Nagar, part of the Just Rights for Children network, which is working to end child marriage across India.

The work is never easy. But Sunita continues, one conversation at a time, fighting for her daughter and every daughter in the nation.

Imagine retiring after a distinguished career in IT, where you helped shape Bengaluru’s tech parks, and dedicating your post-retirement life to fighting corruption and misgovernance using one powerful tool: the RTI.

This is the inspiring story of 80-year-old Ravindranath Guru, whose relentless pursuit of justice has uncovered scams, unauthorized building approvals, and mismanagement of public funds across Karnataka.

"After retirement, I realised that I was receiving a good amount of pension and my children were settling. But what bothered me was society and corruption; which is when I decided to give it back to society in my own way of RTI activism. My goal was simple: to help RTI reach every common man and deliver justice," Guru shared with The New Indian Express.

Starting in his neighbourhood in Banashankari, Bengaluru, Guru’s activism grew into a movement through the Karnataka Right to Information Act Forum (KRIA), which he co-founded.

Since 2004, he has filed over 1,100 RTIs, exposing irregularities in housing for the urban poor, misuse of MP/MLA funds, and unauthorized construction, all while promoting RTI as a tool for every citizen.

On International Anti-Corruption Day, Ravindranath Guru’s journey stands as a reminder that real change doesn’t always require political power or extraordinary resources—sometimes, it begins with one citizen choosing to ask the right questions.

Devendra Kumar’s early life in South Delhi’s Dakshinpuri was marked by poverty, violence, and instability. Abandoned at age two, he survived gang exposure and substance abuse before turning his life around through community volunteering. In 2012, he founded the Ladli Foundation Trust to protect vulnerable girls and support underserved communities.

What began with mass weddings has expanded into health, education, WASH, crime-prevention, and skill-building initiatives impacting 2.9 million people across 14 states. From AI-enabled smart toilets to digital classrooms and long-term support for girls, Ladli continues to push systemic change through partnerships with government and PSUs.
