Chris Smalling should be sold.. !!!!
Crish smalling has reinvented himself as footballer in the yearlong loan spell at ROMA with him being ranked as one of the best defender if not the best of the current Serie A season. This has convinced their manger to pursue Manchester united board for the permanent signature of the player.
The deal seems perfect for smalling when he looks at the bigger picture for regaining his place as the England's CB option. But not all is in the hands of player, United must agree with the valuation of the ROMA for smalling, on the other hand United themself are in a search of CB to accompany Maguire and lindelof as a squad player who can push for the starting place. This means an ambitious player like smalling will have to accept the squad role at United which will put his chances of playing for the three lions in the upcoming euros in jeopardy.
United's problem at CB have be highlighted since the restart not because the current CB pairing is poor but the fact that they have an inherent problem which cannot be improved upon and the best patner for either of the current CBs Axel tuanzebe and Eric baily both of them are injury prone, add to that Baily when fit has a lot of concentration issues in the match, making it difficult for the coach to justify his selection. Getting smalling back will not solve the problems in our current defensive pairing i.e lack of pace. More over smalling would have to fit into Ole's style of football i.e playing it out from the back to which smalling might suffer.
Yes getting smalling back will strengthen our CB area but would it be fair to the player who has got the chance to end his career on high playing consistently, challenging for the national team place (which is more realistic if he played with ROMA). Also United can look at the youth talent in the form of Mengi to challenge Axel for that third place CB and eventually prove a perfect patner for either of Maguire or lindelof.
