Handwriting is much more than simply holding a pencil and writing on paper. It is a complex developmental skill that involves the integration of the body, brain, and visual system working together in coordination.
Strong handwriting begins with a stable foundation β including shoulder strength, core stability, posture, and arm control. Before fine motor skills can develop efficiently, children need adequate postural control and upper body stability to support smooth and controlled hand movements.
Handwriting also depends heavily on visual and occulo-motor skills such as visual tracking, eye-hand coordination, visual perception, and the ability of the eyes to move smoothly across a page. These skills help children maintain spacing, letter formation, alignment, and copying abilities.
When these foundational skills are weak, children may struggle with poor pencil grip, slow writing speed, letter reversals, excessive erasing, fatigue, or avoidance of writing tasks. Supporting handwriting development therefore requires a holistic approach that strengthens gross motor skills, sensory processing, visual skills, attention, and fine motor coordination alongside writing practice itself.
At Empower, we assess the challenges and offer individualised handwriting program based on the childβs needs.
