The boys at APL have been pretty quiet recently nursing puzzle related hangovers, but we’re back and it’s great to see the national media finally recognising our international success!

They bravely represented NZ at the World Puzzle Champs, but lost in pretty much everything.

And that's a wrap on a very intense World Sudoku Championships! In the individual category Matt Russell was the best of the kiwis and has earned the title of New Zealand's best puzzler! While Finbarr Noble brought up the rear of the New Zealand and also the world rankings and is now officially the worst puzzler in the world! In the team rankings, see the photo below of the best country and the worst country together. We won't say who's who.

Here's an example of one of the easiest sudoku the boys have faced so far. This was the "warm up welcome" sudoku. Have a go yourself and don't be deterred by the fact that the children from the Chinese team completed it in under 2 minutes. Yes there are literal children here and they are crushing it!

DAY 2: Rudyard Kipling once wrote that "India is a place beyond all others where one must not take things too seriously - the midday sun always expected."

With respect to the author of The Jungle Book the boys have been taking things just a little seriously having clocked 10 straight hours of sudoku solving yesterday and boldly sallying forth for a further 8 hours today.

Yesterday we solved sudoku with such exhilarating names as: "the Duels", the " Two to Tango " and the team based "Yours or Mine?" With a big shout out to Borislav the Bulgarian for rounding out the numbers to bring our team up to strength!

Today the lads will be facing some devilishly tricky puzzles. There'll be Samurai sudoku, there'll be Rhombus sudoku, there'll be Confused Knight sudoku, and why I wouldn't be surprised if there was even a Classic sudoku in there too.

Despite attending a diplomatic conference with emissaries from the Russian and Korean teams last night, where refreshments were liberally served, the lads are heading into day two stronger than ever; their minds full of puzzles and there puku full of breakfast curry. And as you'll see we even managed to catch some of that midday sun.

Day 1 for the boys in Bangalore and already they have traded pen for bat and ball as they took a well deserved break from sudoku practice to make up numbers in a local cricket match. On a pitch that can only be described as a spinners wet dream, cricket was truly the winner on the day. While the locals outshone our boys with bat and ball the kiwis truly excelled with their sledging, breaking through the language barrier to deliver some truly vicious jabs and make their fathers proud. Now back to the books for more prep.

Under a week until the tournament begins!
AP HQ is overflowing with puzzles as we complete our final preparation and hope that the hard work we have put in will pay off when it comes time to compete.
