Did you know that sharks have existed on this planet longer than trees?
There’s no thrill quite like encountering one of the ocean’s apex predators underwater. Diving with tiger sharks is particularly captivating—these intelligent, sharp, and intensely curious predators demand the utmost respect and caution.
This October, we had the privilege of diving with these majestic hunters in the blue waters of Addu. While tiger sharks typically inhabit very deep waters, there’s a remarkable spot off the island of Hithadhoo where they regularly appear, along with grey reef sharks and silvertips.
The dive becomes a feeding frenzy thanks to chumming—baiting the water with tuna heads and guts. While chumming as a diving practice is debatable, there’s no denying the adrenaline rush of watching these magnificent creatures in action.
A few personal recommendations for this type of diving:
🦈 Choose your operator carefully. Experience is everything when it comes to shark diving.
🦈 Stay with your buddy and group at all times. Never allow yourself to become separated. The larger the group, the safer you’ll be.
🦈 Remain calm but vigilant. Maintain a 360-degree awareness of your surroundings at all times.
🦈 Never underestimate these creatures. They are faster, stronger, and always hungry. Remember: you’re in their territory.
🦈 Finally, while sharks aren’t mindless hunters and humans aren’t part of their natural diet, never behave in ways that might spark their curiosity or trigger their hunting instincts. Respect them, keep your distance, and admire them from afar.
