MOVING TOWARDS AGENCY, A movement based workshop on Somatics with Kumudha Chandrasekaran at Abstratics, Bengaluru.

When: 19th Sept (10 AM to 2 PM) & 20th Sept (3 PM to 7 PM)
Where: Abstratics, Bengaluru

Price: 3000 INR per person

A practice-based and accessible approach to the body through Developmental and Somatic Movement, rooted in the philosophy of Thomas Hanna.

The workshop combines somatic movement, participatory reading, reflection, and conversations around body–mind theories and educational psychology. Through guided practice and informed thinking, participants will develop a robust movement routine while cultivating greater body awareness, clarity, confidence, and agency in movement and everyday choices.

WORKSHOP TAKEAWAYS: Participants will develop a robust and accessible movement routine, a visual mind map connecting the concepts explored, and a guided experience of integrating thought with action. For artists and teachers, the workshop offers tools to connect the body–mind for practice and performance, strengthen the fundamentals of their art form, explore the benefits of cross-learning and movement training, and deepen their approach to learning and teaching through internal feedback.

Developed from Kumudha Chandrasekaran’s research at the Royal Academy of Dance, London, the workshop is open to dancers, movement practitioners, theatre artists, yoga practitioners, teachers, and anyone curious about developing a deeper and more informed movement practice.

Together, we explore somatics as a practice of listening, awareness, and choice.

We are deeply grateful to the team at The Nila Festival of Arts and Atta Galatta for giving our Bharatanatyam students the opportunity to present DEVI, a choreographic work exploring the many facets of the feminine divine.

It was an honour to share the stage and be a part of a festival that celebrates art, culture, and meaningful artistic expression. Opportunities like these inspire our students to grow as performers and connect with audiences through dance.

Our sincere thanks to the entire team Nila and Atta Galatta for your warmth, support, and hospitality.

A meaningful reminder of how deeply a teacher shapes the learning process beyond just technique. Grateful to Soundarya ma’am for creating an Adavu Loka session that felt rooted in guidance, observation, and genuine exchange.

Through her thoughtful approach to Bharatanatyam, alignment, and body awareness, the session encouraged dancers to look at the basics with greater care and understanding. Working through adavus in first speed became less about repetition and more about listening, refining, and growing through each correction and insight shared.

The bond between a teacher and student plays such an important role in nurturing learning, and this session truly reflected that spirit. Thankful to Soundarya ma’am for sharing her knowledge with so much generosity and clarity.

Grateful to Ramya for guiding a deeply engaging Adavu Loka session that invited everyone to look at the basics with renewed attention. The session was marked by a strong emphasis on detail, encouraging dancers to slow down and examine each movement with care and awareness.

What made the experience particularly meaningful was Ramya’s ability to bring together her medical knowledge and Bharatanatyam practice. Her insights into alignment, body mechanics, and the natural limitations of the body offered a thoughtful perspective on how technique can be approached with both precision and responsibility.

Working through adavus in first speed became less about repetition and more about refinement and understanding — noticing how small corrections in placement, balance, and energy can transform the quality of movement.

Thankful to Ramya for sharing her knowledge so generously and for creating a space that encouraged learning, observation, and deeper engagement with the fundamentals.
