Why We’re Done Calling It the “Turkish Get-Up”
Now: The Strongman Get-Up
Let’s set the record straight.
This movement is powerful , but the name? Misleading.
There’s zero historical evidence that it came from Turkey.
Instead, it likely evolved out of 19th-century European strongman training , where athletes across Germany, Austria, and Eastern Europe practiced ground-to-stand lifts to build real-world, battlefield-ready strength.
So why was it called “Turkish”?
Because “exotic” names made exercises sound more intriguing.
It’s the same reason we have terms like the “Russian twist.”
And while we genuinely respect Turkish culture and its people , recent geopolitical decisions, especially Turkey’s support of Pakistan in its conflict with India, force us to reevaluate the names we associate with our training.
Behold, The Strongman Get-Up!
