The Knuckleball is intended to deceive the batters and get them to go through with their shot earlier than expected. It is held between the knuckles of your index finger and middle finger. Firstly, one needs to practice holding the ball between those knuckles to get a good grip and get a decent feel of it. Once the grip is fine and a bowler is confident that the ball will not slip out of his/her hand, it is when they start bowling the knuckleballs.

Adapted from baseball, the knuckleball is a variety of slower delivery which has become increasingly common in recent years. India’s Zaheer Khan was an early exponent, while Jofra Archer used it to great effect at last year’s World Cup, most notably in his dismissal of Glenn Maxwell in the semi-final.

Some tips from Pat Brown (He made his international debut for England during the T20I series against New Zealand in November 2019)

1. Bring your fingers back and point them downwards towards your thumb
2. Bend the top of your fingers if you can, then set the ball underneath your nails and push down with your fingers. A lot of people find it difficult to hold the ball in place. It helps if you have big hands!

If the knuckleball is not already part of your armoury, now is the time to get in touch with our TCR experts on the app! Practice it to become more effective in your upcoming matches.

Do you think there exists a link between your thoughts and your heart rate?
How does it affect your performance?

An experiment answered this question: This experiment conducted (mentioned in Journal of Sport & Exercise Psychology) put 42 academy cricketers through a pressurized batting test, with their cardiovascular reactions recorded as they were being told of the batting test. Viewing the test as a challenge lead to superior performance compared to viewing the test as a threat.

A shift in attitude is one of the key components of performing better under pressure and raises the importance of being psychologically strong.

Play the ball close to your body and below your eyes.
To maximize batting performance, the batsman must use his head to his advantage. Keeping as still as possible allows him/her to pick up the subconscious cues from the bowler's run-up and delivery and to allow maximum concentration on the hand/ball/fingers/crease position upon release.

Former India batsman Virender Sehwag, who scored more than 8,000 runs in 104 Tests revealed tips from former India captains Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi and Sunil Gavaskar- to take guard on middle- and off-stump rather than leg-stump so that you can be closer to the ball even if you don’t move your feet too much.

Few tips on playing close to the body by Sachin Tendulkar:
Playing close to the body starts with keeping your hands close to the body.
When you take a back-lift your hands need to be as close to your body as possible.
When your hands are close to your body, you are in better control of defending the ball and playing as late as possible. But when hands start going away, there is less control on your bat swing and balance is affected.

We often hear commentators say that a lapse in concentration cost the batsman his wicket.
By having good concentration we mean the ability to fully focus on every ball in an innings from the bowler's hand onto the bat face.
Although every sport has unique cues, there are some common denominators and it is helpful to analyse the attentional demands of a sport by considering a model (Nideffer, 1976) depicting two dimensions:

1st Dimension of concentration:
The width of attention – whether attention is BROAD OR NARROW the number of cues to which the performer should attend.

As a batsman EACH delivery requires focusing on the bowler's hand and/or the seam of the ball, watching them all very closely. Or as a bowler, for example, focusing on the line and length' of the delivery. This requires a NARROW span of concentration.

Whereas standing back at the crease to look and observe the field placings in order to evaluate where to place and hit the ball through the gaps requires a BROAD span of concentration.

2nd DIMENSION of CONCENTRATION

INTERNAL= focusing on your sensations, feelings or thoughts.
EXTERNAL = focusing on people, things, or events outside yourself.

Whatever the object of concentration, cording to Syer and Connolly (1998) either internal or external (narrow or bad) the cricketer who has the deepest concentration is he who can harmonise the physical, emotional and mental strands of being and successfully focus them on the task at hand.

Virat Kohli loves doing deadlifts: Here's why you too should

You’ll spend lots of time on the cricket field in a bent over position engaging your lats when you’re batting or bowling. Deadlifts build the entirety of your back, strengthen your core and also build your legs. Put simply, they’re the king of compound movements.
Specifically for cricket, the Romanian or Stiff Leg deadlift is a good adaption to include in your training routine. These focus more on your hamstrings, which will be engaged often when running on the field.

What's your PR in Deadlifts as a cricketer? Tell us in the comments below!

Video is more efficient for processing and memory recall. The visual and auditory nature of videos appeals to a wide audience and allows each one to process information in a way that’s natural to them. It improves the learning experience.

One gets to see and hear the concept being taught, and they can process it in the same way they process their everyday interactions. Information is presented in such a way that targets both the auditory and visual channels simultaneously. This serves to increase processing in the working memory and prevents cognitive overload.

Video Feedback analysis is an important tool that's now available on the TCR app. It helps an athlete receive genuine and accurate feedback to improve and optimize their skills and technique from the TCR Experts.

Pre-performance routines are a great mental warm up, and can be used to advantage in cricket.
They serve as a means to tune into your zone of optimal functioning in pressure situations.
The purpose of a pre performance routine is to provide you with:

· The optimal mind-set to achieve the desired outcome

· Assist the neuromuscular pathways

· Assist in schema development or maintenance

Your routine is individual to you; it’s what works for you.
It requires discussion, trial and error, and effort, to get a great routine up and running.

Every batsman needs a solid defensive technique to get those big scores.
The front foot defence is one stroke that may not be glamorous, but every batsman should have sorted right down to a tee.

Why? So you can negate the good balls, tire bowlers out, dent their confidence and attack according to your own free will when bad balls are at your disposal. Make no mistake, a solid defence has attacking attributes in many ways other than just scoring runs. It can irritate a bowler knowing he has his work cut out.

Technique to get it right - Playing the ball right under your eyes is key. Different defensive techniques are adopted depending on if it’s a fast bowler, a spinner or a left-arm orthodox spinner. With the adoption of DRS, the front foot defensive technique has changed over the years with the batter trying to use his bat as his first line of defence making sure he gets the bat in front of the pad, rather than to its side, especially to a spinner.
