The Knuckleball is intended to deceive the batters and get them to go through with their shot earlier than expected. It is held between the knuckles of your index finger and middle finger. Firstly, one needs to practice holding the ball between those knuckles to get a good grip and get a decent feel of it. Once the grip is fine and a bowler is confident that the ball will not slip out of his/her hand, it is when they start bowling the knuckleballs.
Adapted from baseball, the knuckleball is a variety of slower delivery which has become increasingly common in recent years. India’s Zaheer Khan was an early exponent, while Jofra Archer used it to great effect at last year’s World Cup, most notably in his dismissal of Glenn Maxwell in the semi-final.
Some tips from Pat Brown (He made his international debut for England during the T20I series against New Zealand in November 2019)
1. Bring your fingers back and point them downwards towards your thumb
2. Bend the top of your fingers if you can, then set the ball underneath your nails and push down with your fingers. A lot of people find it difficult to hold the ball in place. It helps if you have big hands!
