Kieron Pollard, a power-hitting all-rounder from the West Indies, gained attention after his explosive performances in the 2009 Champions League T20 (CLT20) for Trinidad & Tobago. His match-winning knocks, big-hitting ability, and handy medium-pace bowling made him a highly sought-after player in the 2010 IPL auction.
The Bidding War
During the auction, four franchises—Mumbai Indians, Chennai Super Kings, Kolkata Knight Riders, and Royal Challengers Bangalore—went all out for him. The bids quickly reached the maximum auction limit of $750,000 (the highest price allowed at the time).
Since multiple teams hit the bidding cap, a unique tie-breaker rule was used. Each of the four franchises submitted a secret bid (an additional undisclosed amount beyond $750,000) to the IPL governing council. The team with the highest secret bid would get Pollard.
