14.01.26 | state cup | Hapoel Tel Aviv - Maccabi Tel Aviv 4:5 in penalty shootout (1:1, 1:1) | Bloomfield stadium Tel Aviv
The hate between the arch rivals that is back on pre war levels and the league derby was canceled last minute by the police because of excessive use of pyrotechnics by Hapoel Ultras which led to subsequent anti police protests of the Hapoel Ultras that spanned over weeks and drew ire of ministers and other public figures. Attempts to curb the protest with police violence failed and added to the tensions surrounding the state cup derby.
Expectations to see some "balagan" were high but what actually happened didn't live up to it. For the first time the derby didn't have to be paused after kickoff because of smoke. There's been smoke and fireworks in the Hapoel stands and flares in the Maccabi stands but compared to any derby before it was scaled back.
The police presence around and in the stadium was insane and the controls done in a way that created Hundreds of meters of waiting lines at the entrances.
As always since 7/10 the cauldron fell into silence and applauding from all stands when names of murdered and fallen fans were read out. After all even the derby is not everything.
Support was great from both sides but the game wasn't. Maccabi converted its dominance into lead in the beginning of HT2 but Hapoels wonderkid Turiel brought his colours back only minutes later. Then a red card for Maccabi made the game more balanced. There have been few opportunities for both sides to score but in the end a penalty shootout had to conclude a winner. After Maccabi failed its 4th. attempt, Hapoel just had to put its last one in the net but the story ended otherwise. In the end Maccabi added another win and one has to look back many years to find out when the reds won a derby.
