Your health and safety is my number one priority!
I know toxic fitness culture pushes the lie that your exercise should take priority and you should never ever skip an exercise.
Um I'm sorry, what? We exercise and move to support our health! If exercising would be detrimental to your health, then skipping would be the healthy choice!
I work a lot with clients with chronic illnesses, oftentimes undiagnosed, neurological disorders, cancer patients, so it's especially important to me to be transparent when I'm under the weather (regardless of C0vid, but especially in a c0vid world ....)
-I always take c0vid tests
-I always tell my students when I'm feeling sick and what exactly my symptoms are and how severe
-I let my students decide if they're comfortable meeting. They have the autonomy over their bodies and their health decisions. No pressure from my end.
-If they do want to meet/ come to class, I take precautions! I mask, keep my distance and if possible we exercise outdoors.
I came down with a cold right as Yom Kippur started. I've been doing tons of c0vid tests that are negative but I also know there are plenty of false negatives so I keep testing.
On Monday I let my private student know. She decided to opt out of our class that day. Great! She's making decisions to support her health! This is the goal!
Today I'm already feeling better, tests are all still negative, I asked her if she wanted to meet or not. She did, with precautions.
I doubled up my masks (I prefer to wear cloth for comfort and sensory reasons and then wear a medical one over the cloth one), we exercised on her balcony, I kept my distance and stayed facing away from her and didn't do hands on adjustments today.
If she hadn't been comfortable meeting today, we wouldn't have.
Because exercise is not the end all be all of health.
It's just one little piece of the puzzle.
And sometimes, for a myriad of reasons, skipping a day or week is the healthy choice.
