Again, not my photo, from the net, but heard these (Stone curlews, Burhinus oedicnemus) late Saturday evening from outside. They come onto the field, wadi Kashani up from Nahal Darga some nights and their calls are far carrying. Now the centre of the field is a storage area for building materials and the upper part is a park, can't know how far north they come into it but they sounded close! I love hearing them! 'Cervan' in Hebrew.

Seems so painfully incongruous on the day our three starved hostages return with so much pain to face, I share such a sighting, but such is life. Black shouldered kite! Not my photo, (from the net) but the bird I saw this afternoon at around 3.30 p.m. in one of the trees circled in yellow. (I was standing at green cross, by park there) . Awesome view, no mistaking, one of those eye widening jaw dropping sightings, yes, a lifer! Over twenty five species today around James McDonald boulevard including white throated kingfisher, at least five chukar partridges, a hoopoe, serins, one singing, a female black redstart , European robin, a few starlings, chaffinches , a small warbler, likely chiffchaff as well as the usual residents.

Serins are back :) בזבוז אירופי Happy to see and hear them again :) Not my photo. They esp. like the tree ringed in yellow.. I've seen them there for the last few winters, one, two or several, and can also be seen in the wider area ringed. Several chukar partridges in the terraces today. Also regularly in the park: house sparrows, mynahs, greenfinches, bulbuls, sunbirds, chaffinches, European robins, graceful warblers, great t**s, hooded crows, jackdaws, Syrian woodpeckers, jays, hoopoes. Seen in the wild areas near the park and sometimes in the park, stonechats and bluethroats this time of year

Swifts are still about but they'll be leaving soon, love to see and hear them winging about up high! No luck on chukar partridges (hogla) recently, that new building site is probably deterring them from entering the park but I always look out for them and listen. Greenfinches, (yarkanim) graceful warblers,(pashoshim) mynahs still singing. Great t**s... (yargazi) a little song but they're mostly busy feeding their families. Calls from White throated kingfishers (shaldag leven hahazeh) by the field lately, including their territorial trill calls.

Sorry it's been so long since I reported anything! Tormos (lupin ) season has been and gone up on Mitzpetel. So gorgeous! Hope you got up there to see them! After the flowers finished I picked a bag full of 'beans' and processed them.. it takes six days... and ate them. Yum! :) If anyone wants to know how, ask, it's easy.
Bee eaters have been flying over the neighbourhood over the last couple of weeks, so beautiful, in flocks of about twelve to twenty calling 'troop troop' , looking like large swallows. (see photos) Lots of actual swallows flying over the valley behind Eliyahu Hakim.. Hirundo daurica I think. Swifts too screaming overhead esp. in the evening. I'll try to report more regularly.

About time I wrote a report! First.. several visits lately to the 'etgar' park down from the American embassy. Best place to look for birds is the lovely walled terraced area about three quarters the way up the park.. lots of hawthorns, fig, olive and pomegranate trees and other vegetation. Many birds use this area.. almost every one a bulbul or great tit but also a number of wintering birds such as european robins... one singing in there the other day, chiffchaffs, and others.. sit there quietly and keep an eye out.. bring binoculars! Residents such as blackbirds, eurasian jays, hoopoes, sunbirds and graceful warblers (pashosh) and, one of my favourites, the rufous bush chat, (or bush robin) in the photo.. such a pretty! and also... chukar partridges! To be continued.
