Welcoming the New Provost to Beit Ben Yehuda
We were delighted to welcome Olliver Zobel, the newly appointed Protestant Provost of Jerusalem, and his wife Martina to Beit Ben Yehuda.

Our conversation focused on the importance of German-Israeli youth exchange and the particular contribution of international volunteer services. By creating opportunities for meaningful personal encounters, these programs help strengthen dialogue, challenge prejudices, and build lasting connections between both societies.
Olliver Zobel shared that he currently serves as Dean of the Protestant Deanery of Ingelheim-Oppenheim. At the same time, his professional journey has repeatedly brought him to Jerusalem and the Holy Land: as a student, as a vicar at the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer in Jerusalem, and through his work in the leadership and administration of the Jesus Brotherhood’s Gnadenthal community in Latrun, near Jerusalem.
The Protestant Church in Germany also supports initiatives that foster encounters between young people from Germany and Israel, including the “Studium in Israel” program.
Olliver Zobel will officially begin his ministry as Provost on December 1st. We are grateful for his visit and look forward to our future cooperation!

Shoah Remembrance after October 7

Last week, Uriel Kashi, ASF Country Representative in Israel and Director of Beit Ben Yehuda, took part in ConAct’s Think Tank Seminar in Berlin, “Commemorating the Shoah in Challenging Times – Challenges & Discourses in German-Israeli Encounters.” The seminar brought together professionals from Germany and Israel to reflect on how Shoah remembrance can remain meaningful in German-Israeli youth exchange, especially after October 7 and amid increasingly polarized public debates.

What experiences do young ASF volunteers have today when they work in Jewish institutions in Europe and the United States - and heightened security measures suddenly become part of their everyday lives?

To explore this question, Uriel Kashi, ASF Country Representative in Israel, this week organized an online reflection session with volunteers from different countries like Poland, France, Norway and the USA. The participants work in Jewish retirement homes, kindergartens, cultural institutes, and memorial sites, among other places.

They shared very concrete experiences from their daily work: police and security guards in front of Jewish institutions; children in a Jewish kindergarten for whom security personnel have long become part of everyday life, but who are not allowed to leave the kindergarten on certain holidays for security reasons; and colleagues who prefer to speak more quietly about Jewish life in public.

One volunteer also spoke about a disturbing incident involving construction workers at her institution, during which the police had to intervene. But there were also others who described everyday life without visible security measures.

What became clear: volunteers need spaces where they can process their experiences, ask questions, and learn from one another. Good support therefore means more than organizational assistance. It also requires reliable spaces for conversation in challenging times.

ASF will continue to engage with these questions.

Standing Up for Religious Freedom in Jerusalem
In every society, there are individuals who try to spread intolerance and fear. Sadly, this is also true here in Jerusalem. But there are also people and initiatives who choose a different path: solidarity, responsibility, and practical support. Twice a week, Anett from the ASF Israel office supports the work of the Religious Freedom Data Center by accompanying nuns through the city. Her presence is part of a broader civic effort to help ensure that Christian clergy, religious communities, and pilgrims can move through Jerusalem safely and with dignity. This may seem like a small act. Yet in a city shared by different religions and communities, such gestures carry real meaning. They show that religious freedom is not an abstract value, but something that depends on everyday awareness and the willingness to stand alongside one another.
For ASF Israel, this commitment reflects a central part of our work: strengthening respect, dialogue, and civic responsibility in a society shaped by diversity and complexity.

22. Juni 2026: ZOOM-Vortrag: Auf dem Weg zu diplomatischen Beziehungen: Die Deutsch-Israelischen Studiengruppen und frühe studentische Kontakte

Deutsch-Israelische Beziehungen nach der Shoah sind nicht einfach „entstanden“ – sie wurden Schritt für Schritt aufgebaut. Vertrauen zwischen den beiden Ländern konnte nur wachsen, weil Menschen bereit waren, aufeinander zuzugehen und auch schwierige, manchmal schmerzhafte Begegnungen auszuhalten. Mit der Online-Reihe „Deutsch-israelische Perspektiven“ lädt Aktion Sühnezeichen Friedensdienste (ASF e.V.) dazu ein, die Geschichte dieser Annäherung aus unterschiedlichen Blickwinkeln kennenzulernen.
Noch bevor offizielle Beziehungen aufgenommen wurden, trafen sich junge Menschen aus Deutschland und Israel im Rahmen von Studiengruppen. Der Vortrag per Zoom von Dr. Jonas Hahn zeigt, wie diese frühen Kontakte zur Annäherung der beiden Länder Deutschland und Israel beitrugen und den Grundstein für die spätere Zusammenarbeit legten.
Dies ist der letzte Vortrag unserer dreiteiligen digitalen Vortragsreihe "Deutsch-Israelische Perspektiven".

Ben Yehuda Welcomes Deputy Mayor Adir Schwarz and Deputy Head of Mission Helena Merk
On June 15th we were honored to welcome Deputy Mayor of Jerusalem Adir Schwartz and Deputy Head of Mission of the German Embassy Helena Merks to Beit Ben Yehuda.
The visit provided an important opportunity for an open and constructive exchange about the role of Beit Ben Yehuda as a long-standing place of encounter, dialogue and education in Jerusalem.In our conversation, we discussed the importance of continuing and strengthening the fruitful cooperation between Beit Ben Yehuda, the City of Jerusalem and German partners. We are grateful that the shared value of this cooperation was clearly recognized and that there is a common interest in preserving and further developing this unique place.
We sincerely thank Deputy Mayor Schwartz and Deputy Head of Mission Merks for their visit, their interest and the constructive spirit of the conversation. Beit Ben Yehuda remains committed to fostering dialogue, education and German-Israeli friendship in Jerusalem.

Lishmor al Kesher: Remembering Jerusalem 1967

When Iran announced an attack on Israel the day before our Lishmor al Kesher meeting, we feared that we might - once again - have to cancel the gathering at short notice. Fortunately, our monthly program could take place as planned.
This time, we had the honor of welcoming Prof. Gideon Biger, who gave a vivid and personal lecture on Jerusalem during the Six-Day War in 1967, combining historical analysis with his own memories.
Many of the Holocaust survivors who joined the meeting have been living in Jerusalem for many decades and still remember that period very clearly. During the talk, participants added their own memories and questions: one participant recalled his own service with the tank unit at Armon Hanatziv, while another participant remembered working as a kindergarten teacher in Jerusalem and having to send the children home at noon, when the fighting began.
We were also pleased to welcome several honored guests, among them the former Israeli Ambassador to Poland.

The meeting continued over a shared meal, offering the participants a welcome opportunity to reconnect, exchange memories, and spend time together in a warm and respectful atmosphere. The mood was open, lively, and very positive.

The program is part of Lishmor al Kesher - “Preserving the Connection”, our ongoing cooperation with AMCHA, creating a regular space for encounter, memory, and community at Beit Ben Yehuda.
This event was made possible through the generous support of the Axel Springer Foundation in Berlin.

In times of uncertainty, ongoing war, and deep division, places of encounter matter more than ever.

We are grateful to welcome Seeds of Peace once again to Beit Ben Yehuda, where they held their Core Leadership Program this year. Seeds of Peace develops young leaders who work across lines of difference, building the skills, relationships, and courage needed to help shape more just and inclusive societies. Their work reminds us that dialogue is not a luxury - it is a responsibility.

Their motto, “We reject what is, when we know what can be,” speaks powerfully to the values we share: the belief that young people can imagine a different future, that human connection can challenge fear, and that leadership begins with the willingness to listen, learn, and act.

At Beit Ben Yehuda, we are proud to provide a space where such encounters can take place - a space rooted in remembrance, dialogue, and responsibility.

October 7th changed the face of Israeli society in one morning. Although the Israel-Germany youth exchange has already faced security challenges in the past, their impact on Israeli society was not as decisive and immediate as October 7th. How do you create a meeting between youth and young adults from Israel and Germany after such a disaster, and against the backdrop of war? What can you talk about? How do you make room for a complex conversation that also allows for criticism of Israel? These are just some of the questions we had to deal with, and are still dealing with.
